T Page 4 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1974 Grade changed TAMU’S Academic Appeals Panel voted last night 3 to 1 to raise a student’s fall semester grade from a C to a B. The action was taken following a lengthy discussion between the panel members and the student involved. The student submitted evidence in the form of his grad ed quizzes to support his conten tion that he had performed at a B grade level. The student charged his for mer professor with violating written university regulations by failing to inform his students dur ing the first week of classes of the course’s grading procedures. He further charged the profes sor with having a “capricious at titude” and displaying “disinter est and prejudice” in the case. The student claimed he had re peatedly visited his professor to obtain a final grade on a re graded exam but was continually told “come back tomorrow and I’ll find it.” The student had followed all procedures in appealing his case, the panel agreed, by consulting with the department head and college dean involved. The Aca demic Appeals Panel is a stu dent’s last resort for academic suspension appeals and appeals to overturn final course grades. The panel’s functions are es tablished by the Academic Coun cil. It consists of five faculty members and two students, with two student alternates. Dr. Harry P. Kroitor, English professor and panel chairman, guided the group’s discussion and an extensive questioning of the student. He commended the ap pellant for his honest presentation of explicit information necessary to his case. “We considered all the evidence presented as being relevant to the case, of course,” said Kroitor. “However, all we considered was whether to keep the C or raise it to a B. This does not mean we necessarily accepted any or all of the charges made by the stu dent against his professor.” The panel members generally agreed the professor’s actions in the case reflected a certain degree of irregularity. They requested Kroitor to inform the professor and his department superiors of the panel’s ruling, recommending steps be taken to encourage bet ter relationships between students and professors. “In a sense, all professors were on trial here,” Kroitor said. “We always should try to be system atic and fair in our contacts with students and let them know how our classes will be conducted and graded. “I have always been opposed to a decimalized grading system, because I feel you’re only asking for trouble when you try to grade in a numerical sense.” Other panel members include: Dr. Anthony F. Gangi, professor of geophysics; John B. Beckham, associate dean of the college of science; Dr. Walter H. Thanes, professor of plant science; Dr. John M. Chevrette, associate pro fessor of health and physical ed ucation; John Nash and Shariq Yosufzai, students; and student alternates Chet Edwards and Mike Perrin. bulletin board tonight INDIA ASSOCIATION will show a movie in English at 7:30 p.m. in Room 203 of the Zachry Engineering Center.
