Scholarship Named For Retiring Prof When F. I. (Ike) Dahlberg re tires Jan. 31, the animal science professor will leave behind a last ing memorial to his 33 years of service to Texas A&M. His many faculty friends are establishing a scholarship in his name that will be at least $300. The award will go annually to an entering student in the A&M College of Agriculture. “In my opinion, this is the greatest honor that could be be stowed upon a retiree. This is something that will last,” he said. But Dahlberg’s friends are not stopping at a scholarship. They will hold a dinner in his honor at 7 p.m. Monday at the Ramada Inn and present him a notebook of letters from Texas A&M colleagues and from nu merous acquaintances throughout the livestock industry. One of those students is Dr. O. D. Butler, now head ef the A&M Animal Science De partment. “Over hi^ years of service, Ike developed a reputation of sympa thetic handling of student prob lems. I suppose he was a kind of father image to some. A lot of his former students often tell me how this man helped them over some tough spots,” Butler said. Frank Iver Dahlberg, a native of Taylor, was graduated from A&M with a BS degree in animal husbandry and commissioned in the U. S. Army Reserves in 1325. That same year he became the first farm manager of the newly- opened Texas Technological Col lege at Lubbock. Next, he received his MS de gree from the University of Wis consin and taught school in his hometown until he returned to A&M in 1936 as an instructor and assistant in the meats laboratory. The educator has worked alter nately since 1936 as head of the horse and swine sections of Ani mal Science Department. He was acting head of the department from 1945-47 and farm superin tendent from 1947-57. During the past 14 years, he has taught six different animal science courses. Two of these— Marketing and Grading of Live stock and Meats, and Advanced Livestock Management —- have never been taught at A&M by any other professor. “At one time or another, I’ve taught approximately 75 percent of all the courses in animal hus bandry that have been offered since I’ve been at A&M,” he said. Dahlberg has seen many of his former students return to the university as educators. In addi tion to Butler, among them are Dt. H. O. KUnkel, dean of the College of Agriculture; Dr. H. A. Fitzhugh, Dr. Herman Brown, Dr. O. M. Holt, Dr. A. M. Soren sen, Dr. J. W. Bassett, H. M. Franke and L. D. Wythe, Jr. “I’ve even taught two or three grandsons of my former Taylor high school students,” he recalled. The professor served as swine superintendent of the Southwest ern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth from 1937- 62. He also has judged horses, cattle and hogs at shows in Houston, San Antonio, Tulsa, Phoenix, Memphis, Shreveport any many county and district fairs and stock shows. The animal scientist has been a member of the A&M Methodist Church Board of Stewards for 20 years and has been active with the Boy Scouts for 15 years. He and his wife live at 760 S. Rosemary in Bryan. There they raised three sons, who have pre sented them with five grand children. THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, January 30,1? Across from the Ramada Inn More Accurate Name Needed For Texas Tech, Backers Say AUSTIN t#*) — Opponents of changing the name of Texas Tech nological College to Texas Tech University told Lubbock area legislators Wednesday they think the school should have a mdre accurate name. Texas State University seemed to be the choice of a group of students, faculty members and local residents who came to the Capitol to make their feelings known. The Lubbock school's board of directors recently voted in favor of asking the legislature to re name the institution Texas Tech University. Dr. Walter Cartwright, Tech sociology professor, reported oft a random sampling of faculty, students and alumni, which he said showed a majority of all three groups preferred Texas State University. “The school is not technological in the major areas of instruction ... it would put us in a funny light to have a law school in a university whose name has a word tech that doesn’t mean anything,*' said Dr. Paul V. Prior, chairman of the faculty council. Prior Said that Barbara Specht, a Tech coed who was chosen na tional collegiate football queen, was asked by a boy in California: “What is a doll like you doing in a boys’ technological school." He said the school is a broSul- based institution with a wide variety of degree programs out side technological fields. +S ^ NATIONAL f B BANK COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS CONDENSED STATEMENT OF CONDITION at the Close of Business December 31, 1968 RESOURCES Cash $ 1,589,020.61 U.
