Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, December 15, I960 THE BATTALION Confeence? Probably not! That’s Coach Shelby Metcalf Varsity scoring record against Kilgore. His on the right and their’s a good chance that audience is none other than the Varsity he is bragging on his A&M Fish team that starters, came within four points of breaking the Freshman Cage \ iclory Still Being Talked About By LARRY SMITH People around the campus are still talking about the decisive vic tory of the Fish cagers over the Kilgore Rangers last Friday night. The Fish came within four points of breaking the varsity scoring record as they won 91-67. The varsity record for most points scored was set last year against the Centenary Gentlemen, 95-38. Last Friday night’s game was one of the highest scoring Fish games on record. Herbie Campbell, the Aggie trainer, told Fish Coach Shelby Metcalf after the game that he was a “little surprised” to see the Fish do so well, but Metcalf, a skeptical talker about his team, laughed and added, “Herbie, you’ve been listening to be talk too much.” The high scorer for the Fish against the Ranger, 6-6 center Bill Robinette from Pt. Arthur, didn’t even pay his senior year in high school due to an injury. The Ag gies took him, not knowing whe ther he could come back from his injury or not. Robinette certainly proved he could as he scored 25 points, hitting on 10 out of 14 field goal attempts and adding five free throws. The second scorer for the Fish was 6-1forward Bennie Lennox from Clear Creek, who netted 24 points. Lennox made high school All-American and thus far has looked every bit an All-American. He is considered by some to be one of the best freshman basketball- ers ever to come to Aggieland. Lennox hit on 10 of 24 field goal attempts and added four free throws. Another Fish who looked im pressive was 6-5 forward Lynn Merritt from Robstown. Merritt played on the winning South All- Star team last summer with Len nox. He is called by Coach Met calf the fastest “gunner in the west” because of the quickness he has in getting the ball away and making goals. The next game for the Fish is here against the TCU Wogs Jan. 3. They will be something to watch throughout the basketball season. SPORTS ’Bama-UT Tilt Points To Defense By The Associated Press HOUSTON—Coaches of the Ala bama and Texas teams that meet in Saturday’s Bluebonnet Bowl use different words in describing their favoi'ite brand of football. Opponents of both teams, how ever, have, reason to believe the descriptions given by both Paul (Bear) Bryant and Darrell Royal boil down to a single word—de fense. Bryant, whose Alabama Crimson Tide owns hn 8-1-1 season record, refers to his style of football as “hard-nosed.” Royal, whose Texas Longhorns had a 7-3 regular season, describes his favorite brand as “jaw-to- jaw.” The season records of both teams show clearly that touch downs did not come easily for op ponents of the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide. Texas gave up an average of only 7.5 points per game. Alabama was even better, posting a 5.3 average. Royal’s “jaw-to-jaw” brand of football meets Bryant’s “hard- nosed” variety in a nationally tele vised game at 2 p.m., EST, Satur day at the 70,000-seat Rice Univer sity Stadium. All but 3,000 of the tickets have been sold. Despite both coaches being solid supporters of defensive football both teams have scored an aver age of almost three touchdowns a game. Alabama had an 18-point average in 10 games while Texas averaged 16.4. The Alabama squad will include 46 players and Gary Phillips, a senior guard who was injured early in the season. The Texas traveling group will include 39 players. A crowd of 55,000, a record for an inaugural major bowl game, say last year’s Bluebonnet Classic in which Clemson upset favored Texas Christian. Intramurals Bad weather halted every thing except horseshoes yesterday in in tramural sports. In the only game played in Class C horseshoes, Mitchell Hall de feated Leggett Hall, 2-1. In Class A horseshoes, Sq. 9 edged C-l, 2-1; Sq. 14 won over Sq. 13 by forfeit; Sq. 11 took G-3 by forfeit; and Sq. 17 beat Sq. 12 by forfeit. The finals in Class B basketball are today as another intramural sport somes to an end. It will be hard to tell whether the tournament will consist of bas ketball or player-coach reunions. Henry (Hank) Iba, the OSU coach, will be matching his wits against two of his former stars, Bob Rogers and Doyle Parrick of OU. Foot Stomping-Shouting Anyone who has seen Coach Rogers’ action during a basketball game won’t wonder any longer where he got his foot-stomping and shouting habits after taking one look at Iba’s action on the sidelines. Oklahoma State will go into to night’s game with a season record identical to A&M. Both teams have won three and lost two. Following the A&M-OSU tilt, Oklahoma U will tie up with the University of Houston Cougars at 9. OU supports a 3-1 record while Houston is even at 2-2. The Sooners were undefeated un til earlier this week when the SMU Mustangs batted them down, 67- 61. Houston’s losses have been to A&M and Sam Houston State. The teams will switch opponents for Friday night. The Houston Coliseum will be star-studded both night’s as A&M’s Carroll Broussard, U of H’s Gary Phillips and OSU’s Henry W. Iba, end up opposing each other. First Year for Tourney This is the first year that the Houston tourney has been held and in essence it is taking the place of the usual Southwest Conference Tournament that was done away with last year. More Action After the two games in Houston, A&M will take a short rest before hitting the road again on Dec. 29- 30 when they travel to Lubbock for another four-team tourney with Eastern Kentucky, Texas Tech and the Air Force Academy. The Lubbock games will be the Cadets’ last chance for any pre conference activity as they meet Texas Christian University in Col lege Station, Jan. 3.
