Taken from the roof of Guion hall by Battalion Photographer Seymour Smith, the picture shows Military Walk, looking- toward Sbisa hall. The gimmick is that the picture was taken through Guion’s anamorphic lens, used to widen out CinemaScope pictures. The lens was turned backwards, causing it to “squeeze up” the pic ture. One picture won second place in the feature picture division for newspapers under 50,000 circula tion, and another won honorable mention in the news-features div ision for the same circulation class. Both pictures were taken by Bat- tafion Photographer S e y m o u r Smith. The second place feature picture was a shot of Military Walk taken fhom the top of Guion hall. The picture was taken with a Speed Graphic press Camera, through Guion’s anamorphic propector lens. The lens is used to widen out pictures for. CinemaScope movies; Smith took the picture with the lens reversed, causing everything in the picture to be nan-owed. (See picture above.) The honorable mention news fea ture picture was. of a group, of freshmen giving the statue of Law- arence Sullivan Ross his annual spring cleaning-. The anamorphic lens picture, ti tled “What’s Wrong With This Picture,” ran in The Battalion in October, arid the other, titled “Spring Gleaning,” ran last spring. The Battalion was the only col lege newspaper to place among the winners' in the contest, which attracted more than, 200 Texas newspaper photographers and more than 1,500 pictures. The Battalion entered 10 of Smith’s pictures. Smith, a senior veterinary medicine -major from Sunset, La., has taken pictures for The Battalion for two years, and is now chief photographer for the staff. “We’re glad Seymour got this state-wide recognition,” said Bat talion Co-Editors Rob Boriskie and Harri Baker. “He deserves it.” . Dayli off Awarded Scholastic Plaque Eugene Dayhoff, senior range management student from Hous ton, has been awarded a plaque by the.Texas section of the American Society of Range Management. The award was made on scholastic and essay achievements. He represented A&M in the range plant identification contest Tuesday and Wednesday in San Jose, Calif.
