Wednesday Afternoon, February 20, 1946 The Battalion Page 3 Baylor Beats Aggies to Clinch SWC Title Cage Season Scheduled to Close With Arkansas Series Next Week By Marion Pugh Battalion Sports Editor Last night a determined Baylor five downed the Texas Aggies, 44- 41, to clinch the Southwest Con ference basketball title, but the Bears, for sure knew that they had been in a ball game. The game started slowly, and the score after the first five min utes was A&M 3, Baylor 2. How ever, this was not due to inferior play. Both teams were very cau tious, just taking their time, and feeling the other out. After 10 minutes had slipped by the score stood at 10-7, Aggies. During the entire first half the Aggies led, and it looked as if it might be an other 23 years before the Bruins would win a championship. Half-time score was 20-17 with the Aggies enjoying the upper hand. At the beginning of the second period both teams came out like Whirlaway in the stretch. It was like this until about three minutes were left to decide a winner. Then the Bears get hot as seven and snake-eye, and pull away to a six point lead, but the Aggies started whittling, and with one minute to go the score stood 41-40 with Baylor shaking in their boots. But the cool, smooth boys from Waco started freezing the ball, and the Ags, in an attempt to get the ball, fouled Baylor five times, with the ball taken out of bounds each time. The game came to a thrilling finish with Baylor still freezing the ball, and the Waco fans going absolutely nuts. For Baylor, little Jackie Robin son was outstanding, and tallied 18 points. Edwards was next with 10, and Healey, in the second half played a nice floor game, and was a steadying influence in the clos ing minutes of play. The Aggies played a heads-up, hard-fought game, with Jamie Dawson leading the scoring with 19 points. Dawson was also very effective under the basket in tak ing rebounds. Both Peck Vass and Homer Adams garnered 8 points for the Aggies. It was another case of the A&M boys being so near and yet so far. One of these days they are going to break out in a scoring I’ash and whip someone they are not supposed to. Looks as if old man luck has stayed away long enough. Next Monday and Tuesday night the Aggies meet the Arkansas Ra- zorbacks here in a two-game se ries. This will close out the season for both the Razorbacks and Ag gies.
