HOUSING GUIDE
How to decorate inexpensively
After years of camping out in that
used-to-be-favorite room in mom
and dad’s house, it s time to find an
apartment and decorate exactly how
you want it.
You may want that chic, stylish
humble abode but you may not be
able to fork out the cash needed. So,
how can you do it inexpensively?
First, brainstorm and come up
with a central theme and idea of how
you want your apartment to look.
Then, figure out where to find items
that fit your budget.
Do-it-yourself projects are the way
of the world.
Monica Barrow, communication
junior, decorated most of her apart
ment by studying DIY projects on
YouTube. “Using DIY projects off
YouTube was the most exciting and
efficient way for me to learn how to
decorate my apartment inexpensive
ly,” Barrow said.
Look for sales at favorite depart
ment stores. Many offer discounts
on household items when college
students arrive at school.
Candace Powell, biomedical sci
ences senior, took advantage of back-
to-school deals. “I went to Target
during college night and won a closet
organizer and a mini-fridge for free,”
Powell said. Room packages and
bundle deals also are available.
In college towns, families have ga
rage sales around the start of school
to help incoming students.
Renae Thomas, accounting sopho
more, loves garage sales and relies
on them to furnish her apartment
while saving money. “College towns
often have middle-class families
who sell very nice things at blowout
prices; you’ll be surprised at what
you can get your hands on,” Thomas
said. Garage sales may have a host
of items that you may need to fur
nish your apartment.
