You may want that chic, stylish humble abode but you may not be able to fork out the cash needed. So, how can you do it inexpensively? First, brainstorm and come up with a central theme and idea of how you want your apartment to look. Then, figure out where to find items that fit your budget. Do-it-yourself projects are the way of the world. Monica Barrow, communication junior, decorated most of her apart ment by studying DIY projects on YouTube. “Using DIY projects off YouTube was the most exciting and efficient way for me to learn how to decorate my apartment inexpensive ly,” Barrow said. Look for sales at favorite depart ment stores. Many offer discounts on household items when college students arrive at school. Candace Powell, biomedical sci ences senior, took advantage of back- to-school deals. “I went to Target during college night and won a closet organizer and a mini-fridge for free,” Powell said. Room packages and bundle deals also are available. In college towns, families have ga rage sales around the start of school to help incoming students. Renae Thomas, accounting sopho more, loves garage sales and relies on them to furnish her apartment while saving money. “College towns often have middle-class families who sell very nice things at blowout prices; you’ll be surprised at what you can get your hands on,” Thomas said.
