SPORTS The Battalion I 4.8.15 3 Aggie tennis preps for road games Jena Floyd —THE BATTALION /■ ■ • ■ Senior outfielder Brittany Clopton, who scored A&M's first run Tuesday, swings at the plate. Aggies ride Fox to shutout of UTSA By Milkyas Gashaw Nw The Texas A&M softball team rode an excellent performance from Rachel Fox to a 5-2 victory against UTSA Wednesday night at the Aggie Softball Complex. Head Coach Jo Evans said she was happy with the way her team played in all facets of the game -— offense, de fense and pitching. “We ended up scoring some runs and that really ended up being the dif ference in the game,” Evans said. “We had a couple of flares out there and got some RBIs early. Also, Rachel was great out there tonight. She got lots of strikeouts and kept good command out there.” The No. 22 Aggies (30-10, 7-5 SEC) got off to a fast start, with Fox setting the tone early with a 1-2-3 first inning. Senior Brittany Clopton led off the Aggie offense with a walk and made her way around to third base when Ashley Walters hit into a force- out of Tori Vidales at second base. Ju nior Cali Lanphear made the most of her opportunity with an RBI single down the right field line to bring in Clopton. Lanphear said it was important to make good contact with the pitches and hitting in scoring situations. “I’m hitting on both sides of the plate and that’s a good sign,” Lanphear said. “I think our ball club is doing a good job with two outs and doing a good job moving the runners around.” A&M continued its scoring when Kristen Cuyos placed a blooper over the outstretched glove of the shortstop to bring in Walters and Lanphear. Cuy os displayed some heady basemnning at second when the shortstop and the left fielder, from UTSA both went for the blooper and caused the ball to trickle away from them. Sophomore Reagan Boenker hit an other RBI single to push the lead to 4-0 and chase the UTSA starter after only getting two outs in the first in ning. Junior Kacy Freeze took over the rest of the game in relief and fared much better, completing the game and only allowed one run the rest of the game. Sophomore Celena Massey capped off the scoring for the Aggies with an RBI double down the left field line. With the exception of a two-run hom er from Vivian Tijerina in the sixth, Rachel Fox kept the high-powered Roadrunner offense at bay, allowing only two runs and striking out 10. She spoke about constantly changing up her pitches against such a potent offense. “We worked screwballs and drop- balls and curves right at the knee,” Fox said. “I wasn’t necessarily trying to throw harder, but smarter.” The Aggies are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against North Texas at the Aggie Softball Complex. Men's and women's tennis face top-ranked talent before SEC tournament By Alex Scott rs. Both the men’s and wom- en’s tennis teams are prepar ing for mid-week road matches before closing out their regular seasons this weekend. The No. 11 women’s team (12-4, 9-2 SEC) wih head to Waco, Texas, for a rematch at 5 p.m. Wednesday against the No. 7 Baylor Bears (19-5, 5-1 Big 12). The last time the two teams met, the Aggies defended their home court against the then-No. , 6 Bears in College Station. At the time, the match was an upset, as A&M was ranked No. 30 when it hosted the Bears. Since their first meeting, the Aggies have won six of seven matches and worked their way up the polls. Baylor has done comparatively well. Since its loss on March 19 to A&M, it has won four of its five matches and re mains a top-10 team. However, Baylor looks to re bound from its recent conference loss to No. 18 Texas Tech. The No. 7 Texas A&M men’s team will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Thursday to face No. 24 LSU in its final conference match of the regular season. The Aggies (17-3, 10-1 SEC) have now won nine straight matches and plan to keep the momentum going as they head to the SEC tournament, where they are projected to be a top seed. A&M has been led by freshman AJ Catanzariti, who has won 11 straight singles matches and con- Cody Franklin —THE BATTALION Arthur Rinderknech has contributed to the Aggie men's tennis team wins. tributed to 15 doubles wins. The success at the bottom of the lineup for the Aggies has been key in a number of their matches on this winning run. In addition to Catanzariti, Jordi Ar- conada, Max Lunkin and Arthur Rinderknech have all provided key wins for the Aggies. The Tigers (16-5, 6-4 SEC) have also relied on their depth as of late, especially in their last conference win at Auburn where players on courts four through six all tallied up points for LSU. Although the Tigers were able to leave Auburn with a tight vic tory, they have often been on the losing side of competitive matches this season. Even with four conference losses the Tigers remain in the conversation of the SEC tournament as they sit as the No. 24 team in the nation. The match begins at 3 p.m. Thursday.
