PROVIDED Sophomores Marijosse Navarro (left) and Bianca Fabrizio (right) will travel with the rest of the A&M women's golf team to the Rebel Intercollegiate tournament this weekend. Women's golf team looks to spring back at Ole Miss weekend tournament By Cole Stenholm The Texas A&M women’s golf team returns to action for the first time since mid-March this weekend, as the team travels to the Rebel Intercol legiate competition in Oxford, Miss., hosted by SEC - foe Ole Miss. The tournament will be held at the Ole Miss golf course, and will play 6,210 yards from the tee. Water comes into play on six of the 18 holes on the par 72 course, which features the tra ditional setup of 10 par fours, four par fives, and four par threes. Tournament play will span from Friday to Sunday and will be in the standard, 54-hole format, with trophies going to the first place team as well as individualists. Only three of the 18 participating teams in the field are from the SEC, which includes Ole Miss, No. 12 Ten nessee and No. 14 Texas A&M. A&M and Tennessee are the only ranked teams in the field. Although the Aggies as a team have been off since their run at the Ari zona Wildcat Invitational on March 17, sophomore Marijosse Navarro competed as an amateur in last week’s LPGA event, the Kia Classic. In order to compete in it, Navarro earned a special exemption from her victory at the UC Irvine Invitational earlier this spring. However, Navarro failed to make the -1 cut line at the Classic despite scoring -2 on the front nine of the host course in her opening rounds. Navarro finished at +7, which put her at No. 151. Professional Cristie Kerr won the tournament, along with its $255,000 cash prize after shooting -20 (268). The women’s team will have a two week hiatus after to gear up for the SEC Championship starting April 17. Aggie Golf to host tournament Easter weekend Invitational to put spotlight on Traditions course in Bryan PROVIDED Senior Greg Yates participates in a tournament hosted on March 23. By Cole Stenholm Head coach J.T. Higgins and the Texas A&M men’s golf team jump back out onto the links this Easter weekend, but this time they will stay in-state. The Aggies will host the ninth edi tion of the Aggie Invitational Saturday and Sunday at their home course at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. “This is home,” Higgins said. “We play out here almost every day and we feel like we know every blade of grass and what every putt does, and where to hit it and where to miss, and every thing that is important about playing good golf. So, we’re very comfortable here and we really want to play well on our home golf course.” The Traditions course — a par-72, 7,146-yard track with Bermuda fair ways and rough and TifDwarf Bermu da greens — was designed by former PGA golfer and 18-time major cham pion Jack Nicklaus and his son. Jack Nicklaus II. The Traditions Club, opened in 2004, has been selected over the years as a host site for NCAA Division I re gional and championship events for both men’s and women’s golf, and is the announced site for the 2018 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Regional. Hig gins said he believes the Invitational provides Traditions with an annual op portunity to put the spotlight on their course. “I think Traditions takes great pride in it,” Higgins said. “It’s become their annual showcase to show off the course. It is in perfect condition right now. The greens are perfect. The fair ways are really primed up, even with all of the rain we’ve had. [Golf Course Su perintendent] Jesse Shulse and his staff have done an amazing job getting it ready and it’s just really going to show well this weekend. ” Twelve teams from around the country flock to southeastern Texas this weekend to compete in the event, including four of the nation’s top-25 programs. The co-defending 2014 champion No. 6 LSU, 2006 champion No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 22 California will all be on hand. However, no golf program in this weekend’s field, or in the country for that matter, has won the Invitational as many times as the Aggies, who have claimed their own event three times, including a share of last year’s title with LSU. The spring has featured ups and downs for the A&M team, which is back on the rise with consecutive top- five team finishes and an individual medalist at the Valspar Collegiate In vitational in senior Greg Yates. This time, however, the Aggies will look to sustain and build upon their suc cess, and a tournament on their home course might just be the trick for them to do so, Higgins said. “We feel like we should play good here,” Higgins said. “Like I said, we know the golf course like the back of our hands and we play well here almost every day, so we expect to play well and have a great chance to win the golf tournament.” Both first and second round action of the 54-hole tournament will take place on Saturday, with the first groups scheduled to go off at 7:30 a.m. THE TEXAS A&M STUDENT MEDIA BOARD INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR Editor-in-Chief BATT The Independent Student Voice of Texas A&M since 1893 Summer 2015 (The summer editor will oversee print, digital and special editions, and will serve May 17,2015, through Aug. 15,2015) Qualifications for editor-in-chief of The Battalion are: REQUIRED • Be a Texas A&M student in good standing with the University and enrolled in at least six credit hours (4 if a graduate student) during the term of office (unless fewer credits are required to graduate); • Have at least a 2.25 cumulative grade point ratio (3.25 if a graduate student) and at least a 2.25 grade point ratio (3.25 if a graduate student) in the semester immediately prior to the appointment, the semester of appointment and semester during the term of office.
