Houston airport using fingerprints. he Max F Mgeo of 1 eye scan matches in security tes By Michael Graczyk THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON - Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport began participating Tuesday in a federal test program designed to speed frequent flyers through security checkpoints by using fingerprint and eye scan matches on a special ID card. Houston becomes the third airport in the nation to let passengers who have registered person al information with the Transportation Security Administration to use an express lane that scans their biometric information as they leave ticketing areas for boarding gates. Minneapolis-St. Paul and Los Angeles started the 90-day test last month. Boston and Washington Reagan are set to join later this month. “My sort of analogy is, if you’re trying to find a needle in a haystack, meaning terrorism in a big group of people, you need to try to make the haystack a little bit smaller,” Houston airport director Rick Vacar said. “And I think this program really gets at that point.” After submitting fingerprints and an iris scan to the government, passengers undergo a background check to see if they have outstanding criminal warrants or show up on a terrorist watch list. 0: approved — officials said so far most of applying have been approved — they receive electronic card similar to a credit card. At the airport, passengers insert the card! reader at a kiosk. They look into a mirror ft iris scan, which analyzes the individualized turcs that exist in the colored tissue surrouni the pupil. Then they stick their finger in a seif Deput that detects the unique ridges and valleys person’s fingerprint. If everything matches to the stored datao person, a message appears on a monitor withina seconds that says: “Success. You may proceed.' Transportation Security Administration cials hope about 2,000 people at eachoftliefi airports participate in the Registered Traveler Program, and will make a decision in Novel on whether to expand it. Gretchen Tickle, 61, of Spring, said she comfortable in giving the government her sonal information. She travels extensively her work with a Houston Catholic church believes the ID cards are a great idea toh security checks go faster. ge and n will i exas A< Armiti encemi nd Lieu Sherar aid the odes w< “It has encemi uite ser: e that ( ew life Armit; message “As st l^renelc (grossing in (^oilege Station — Th ere’s f\Jo place L>e li ome!
