Although he is running under the Democratic party. Edwards said he is running a biparti san campaign. As part of his campaign aimed at A&M, Edwards said he would try to lower tuition rates at A&M as well as universities nationwide and work for more students to get federal grants and loans. “We have to keep doors of A&M open to everyone,” Edwards said. While at A&M, Edwards was a member of the Corps of Cadets and received the Earl Rudder/Brown Foundation Award. In 2003, Edwards received the “Legislator of the Year Award” from the Association of the U.S. Army and is running on a slogan of “Strong National Defense.” Edwards said that as a congressman he has worked to keep the army strong and would continue to sup port the military. “My two boys live in a safer world today because of soldiers and families ” Edwards said. “I know that I will spend my entire life making a down payment on that debt.” Retired Lt. Gen. Pete Taylor, a Vietnam veteran and Fort Hood com mander, said Edwards has brought in $820 million in contributions to Fort Hood since he has been in Congress. Retired Gen. Tom Schwartz, for mer commander in chief of U.S. forces in Korea, said that although he has never been politically active, he chose to support Edwards because he has character and integrity. Schwartz said Edwards also championed pay increases for soldiers, health care for active sol diers and veterans and worked to prevent reduction of armed forces in America. “This is a man I admire and respect” Schwartz said. “He is a man of energy and gets things done.” Cameron Salome, a freshman general studies major and member of the Corps, said he supports Edwards because of contributions he has made to the military. “He backs the military, and the contributions he’s done are outstand ing,” Salome said. “Being a former Corps of Cadet member and Aggie, he can relate to the community like no other representative.” Regarding the attempted closing of the Waco Veterans Hospital, Edwards said he worked hard with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to keep it open and has received confirmation that it will remain open. “We owe that quality care to our veterans,” Edwards said. “It would send a terrible message to the troops in Iraq by shutting down the Waco Veteran’s Hospital in the same dis trict as Fort Hood.” Parking Continued from page 1A talk to faculty and staff, to calm their fears, basically, and find out w hat they really want.” Weis said, “If what they really want is to main tain these reserved numbered spaces in the core of campus, we can do that. But the cost is going to be considerably higher than it is now, like 50 percent or more,” Student surface lot per mits, which are currently $141 and valid for nine months, will be replaced with $210 one-year permits. ‘The fall and spring semes ter anti summer semester price would have been $226. We reduced that,’’ Weis said. Garage spots that are not numbered or reserved w ill cost $336 and be valid for one year. Students logging on to http://transportonline.tamu. edu/ with their Net or Neo identification information and password, starting Monday, can also appeal or pay a parking citation and view their status on any park ing lot waiting lists. “It’s putting all of your parking concerns on a one- stop shop,” Mathews said.
