whether the program meets the
criteria for excellence we have
here at A&M.” he said.
Sumpter is a former journal
ist who has worked for several
print publications.
Sumpter worked for the
Bartlesville Examiner-
Enterprise, in Bartlesville,
Okla., the Tulsa Daily-Tribune,
in Tulsa, Okla., and for the
Daytona Beach News-Journal in
Daytona Beach, Fla.
“When 1 was witli the Daytona
Beach News-Journal I was an
assistant city editor, and I focused
on police reporting and business
reporting,” Sumpter said.
Sumpter said he has more
experience in magazine reporting
and has worked for the Oil and
Gas Journal for six years.
Sumpter received his bach
elor's degree at Oklahoma
State University, his master's
at the University of Florida
and his doctorate from the
University of Texas.
Charles A. Johnson, dean of
the College of Liberal Arts, said
he feels Sumpter is well-pre
pared for the position.
“Dr. Sumpter is very well
qualified,” Johnson said. “He
brings experience as a journalist
as well as experience on faculty
and a commitment to provide
journalism education for stu
dents here at Texas A&M.”
Brenna Rackham. however,
said she is not impressed with
the new minor.
”1 think it's sad that they’re
going to take 1 away the journal
ism department altogether. Even
though (the new minor) is a poor
substitute, it’s better than noth
ing,” said Rackham. a sopho
more journalism major.
Though many students are still
upset over the closure of the jour
nalism department, the new jour
nalism education minor will still
allow Aggies interested in study
ing journalism to do so at A&M.
“I think most students I’ve
talked to (who are enrolled as
journalism majors) understand
that they will be able to finish,”
Sumpter said. “I think students
who enter this program will
understand this would be a
good field of study for their,
minor degree.”
