By Chris Curiel THE BATTALION For many track and field teams, the field events are often over looked. With three gold medals in field events last weekend, Texas A&M is not one of those teams. The field event ath letes will be tested when the A&M track and field team travels to Baton Rouge, La., Friday where it will compete in the Bayou Bengal Invitational. “Our strong suit is our field events,” said A&M head coach Ted Nelson. “They keep on progressing.” Nelson said he will be expecting junior pole vaulter Justin Sutton and freshman pole vaulter Dusty Williams to grab all the points they can. The two athletes have been spurring each other on through out the season, as was evident when Sutton and Williams came out with a one-two finish in Houston last weekend. “There’s more competition in prac tice,” Sutton said. “In the meets we all help each other out.” He said a drive to win has pushed these two friends toward perfection. “Out here we do push each other,” Sutton said. “It’s com petition.” Last year, Sutton placed fifth in the Big 12 championship, but this year, with Williams trailing close behind, he said he looks to place even higher. “These two are get ting better and better each week.” Nelson said. A national competi tor in the throws has also emerged from A&M. Senior thrower Josh Ralston is a two- time All-American in the discus throw and hopes to win the 2004 Big 12 championship. “Ralston threw 55- 11,” Nelson said. “This was a really good start for him.” With a strong core of field athletes, A&M looks to keep on developing as a Big 12 contender. The Bayou Bengal Invitational will attract teams from all over the South. Louisiana State University, Texas State, UL-Lafayette and Florida State are some of the 50 teams that are expected to compete this Saturday in Baton Rouge. Swimming Continued from page 1B us? Yes. But Saturday after noon will decide who the better team is,” Sinnott said. “If we have prepared ourselves prop erly, there should be no sur prises. This meet will be used as a measuring stick to see where we are." A&M junior Alfredo Jacobo will attempt to keep his personal streak of eight con secutive wins in the breast stroke alive. Jacobo said he hasn’t thought about SMU too much but knows that the com petition will be fierce. “The fun part of swimming is the competition,” Jacobo said. “It’s almost like going to a party every weekend." The Aggies will face espe cially strong competition in the diving events. A&M senior diver Adam Morgan said the diving events will be hard to judge, but he’s prepared for the challenge. “It’s going to be a definite battle,” Morgan said. “But we have a chance to win the boards.” Despite his strong friend ship with Sinnott, Nash hopes to return to College Station with a win. “They have a long tradition of winning in their pool, and hopefully we can break that,” Nash said. Tennis Continued from page IB home match against Texas. Despite these important matches, the team does not want to overlook the first part of the season. “Non-conference is important to get the ranking we want to have for the NCAA tournament,” Roland said. "Our goals are higher this year.” Ojeda reiterated the team's lofty goals in light of last sea son's success. This weekend's tests will give the Aggies a good barometer to measure how their season will turn out. “We can definitely do better,” Ojeda said. “We want to win the conference, be top-10 and do bet ter than A&M has ever done. “ Ojeda said this year's team also has the chemistry it needs to be successful. “The girls work good together and they support each other,” Ojeda said. “Jessica has taken a leadership role, Nicki is a leader and Roberta has what it takes to be a leader. Everyone steps up and they respond to one another.” John C. Livas • THE BATTALION Senior Chris Nelan swims the freestyle earlier this season. STRETCH Your Dollars!
