"‘BATTALION Retail: 845-2696 Classified: 845-0569 SPORTS 3B THE BATTALION Thursday, November 20, 2003 Tasker Continued from page 1 B scoring with a 73.31 average - the best by an Aggie since All- American Anthony Rodriguez in 1995 - and earning PING All- Region honors. This season. Tasker, Stephen Reed and Parker Briley make up a trio of senior captains providing veteran leadership to a relatively inexperienced A&M team. “All three are such hard workers, they lead by example and they also demand a lot out of their teammates,” Higgins said. “They’ve been everything I’ve wanted out of their senior years.” A&M completed the fall season Oct. 21 with a fifth-place fin ish at the Barona Cup that included a school-record 13-under-par second round. The Aggies placed highly in several tournaments, including a second-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate in Nashville, Tenn. “We’ve had some good finishes but we haven’t really had a tour nament where we’ve all played well,” Tasker said. “We feel we haven’t accomplished anywhere near what we can.” Reed, who tied for first place at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate, said the Aggies wouldn’t be in contention this season without Tasker’s arrival in 2002. “Before he got here we didn’t really have a solid number two guy that’s real solid in all aspects of the game,” Reed said. “He’s a guy that can be as good as he wants to be.” A&M doesn’t play again until February, and Tasker said he’ll use the time off to catch up on schoolwork and adjust his swing. He wouldn’t mind visiting his family and friends back in Willowvale, New South Wales, but he’s been back only twice in three years because of pricey plane tickets and the thousands of miles of travel. “Being that far away from family is kind of hard, but there’s just so many opportunities (here),” he said. “I wouldn’t have a chance to go to college and play a college sport at the level it is over here. It’s unbelievable. The competition there is good but it’s nothing compared to what it is here.” Volleyball Continued from page 1 B difficult to defend for a lot of reasons,” Corbelli said of Nicholas. “As a senior she was n’t going to go out playing on the back row, I guess.” The Aggies will play two of their last three games away from home, most notably against Kansas State on Nov. 26. The Wildcats, who are in first place in the Big 12, defeated A&M earlier this season at G. Rollie White. “We’ve done all the practic ing that they’re going to need to finish out really strong,” Corbelli said. “I think we just need to stay really focused and work on cleaning up and polish ing a few things.” Cowboys Continued from page IB Those are the two teams that kept the Cowboys from scoring. So what’s Parcells got in mind for changing his team’s offensive fortunes? “You can’t wholesale change a lot of things,” Parcells said. “You don’t have an inordinate number of options, so we just got to hope we can do better than we’ve been doing.” In Sunday night’s 12-0 loss at New England, Parcells said his offense had 11 mental errors and four dropped balls. Along with five penalties, three turnovers and a sack. Those kinds of problems are keeping the Cowboys from sustaining offensive drives, which is a big part of their plan. All of the losses came in the only games in which they didn’t have at least a four-minute advantage in time of posses sion. And maybe other teams are starting to figure parcells out the Cowboys. “Teams are scheming us well,” Carter said. “We’re not helping ourselves either. We’ve got to play better. That’s obvious.” Parcells said Carter, the third-year quarterback who won the job during training camp, isn’t the problem. He disagrees with the notion that Carter is digressing, even though he threw three inter ceptions last week while going over 200 yards passing for the first time in six games. “I think Quincy will be fine if we can just get every everything, most everything else kind of in order for him,” Parcells said. “Penalties, things like that. If we can do some of that better, I think we’ll be OK.” The Cowboys also have to be more productive running the ball and receivers have to do a better job of catching it. Troy Hambrick has two 100-yard games, but was held to 60 yards or less in seven other games and is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. The top three receivers — Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn and Antonio Bryant — have just 10 catches the last two games. Still, the Cowboys share first place in the NFC East with Philadelphia, which has won five straight games since losing at Dallas. “Right now, I’ve got a team that has a chance to compete,” Parcells said. “We’ve got tough games coming up and I’m not going to dwell on negative things in front of my team. It’s no time to be doing that. It’s time to be looking forward.” SPORTS IN BRIEF Women’s tennis signs three Texas A&M women's tennis coach Bobby Kleinecke announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent. Anna Blagodarova, from Toronto, Ontario, was ranked No. 6 in the Canada 2002 Junior National Final Rankings in both girls 18 singles and girls 18 dou bles and is arguably the top Canadian college recruit this year. She was the singles and doubles champion at the Olympic Ontario Open and was a finalist at the $9,000 Canadian Indoor Open. In addition, Blagodarova was the doubles champion at the Under 18 Outdoor Provincials. She placed fifth in the 2002 Under 18 Outdoor Nationals. Blagodarova chose A&M over Auburn, Oregon and San Diego. Tiffany Clifford, from Little Rock, Ark., has been ranked the No. 1 player in Arkansas since she was 12 years old, and she also is ranked in the top 10 in the Southern Section and in the top 100 nationally. Clifford selected A&M over Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and LSU. Marisa Druss, from Austin, trains at Barton Creek Country Club and John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch, is a top-five player in Texas and ranked in the top 100 nationally. She was selected Westlake High School's most valu able player for the 2003-2003 sea son. Clifford, who has trained at John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas, for the past three years, was the 2002-03 recipient of the Spencer Ritchie Leadership Award. She chose A&M over Virginia, Rice, Colorado and Purdue. “I am very pleased with our early signees," Kleinecke said. “Not only are they great tennis players, but they are conscientious stu dents and great people. Team chemistry is so important, and I know Anna, Tiffany and Marisa will add a lot to our team.” Large hall and classrooms with commercial kitchen available.
