SPORTS 3B THE BATTALION Thursday, November 13, 2003 Big 12 Continued from page 1 B units and will look to finally put the clamps on the run after get ting burned by mobile quarter backs in previous meetings against Texas and Missouri. Wildcat quarterback Ell Roberson will provide another juke-and-throw test for the Buskers this weekend. Meanwhile, KSU has hit its stride offensively. Since return ing from a broken hand, Roberson has helped his team rattle off four straight victories. More impressive is the fact that Roberson’s offensive squad has put up at least 38 points in each of those convincing victories and will travel to meet the Buskers on their home turf surging with confidence. A statistician in a basement somewhere calculated that KSU has won 90 percent of its games in the month of November since the inception of Big 12 play. The Wildcats (8-3, 4-2 Big 12) will have to be wary of that other 10 percent when they enter Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb., as the Buskers (8-2, 4-2 Big 12) have an imposing home record to accent their tasteful Blackshirt defenders. Kickoff for this divisional clash is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday and will be televised on ABC. Serial Killers Halloween has come and gone and the University of Oklahoma is still wearing the scariest mask. As the heir appar ent to the college football throne this year, facing Baylor this Saturday should be like taking a nap on a comfortable waterbed for the third weekend in a row. In its last two outings against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, OU effortlessly outscored both to the tune of 129-9. While shutting out the Aggies last week, all the Sooners had to do to score was sneeze in the direction of their end zone. When OU hosts Baylor at home this weekend it should Watkins help explain why Braille is put on drive through ATMs: The Sooners are going to run over Baylor without even looking. Stoops said his team isn’t looking past Baylor and is approaching it as any other game. i “Hopefully, this week we have a chance to lock up the South division and give us an opportunity to play in the Big 12 Championship game,” Stoops said. “Everything has its time, (my team is) good about not looking ahead. All that we can do anything about is the game we play here this week. We’re going to get ready to play well.” Interstate Bragging Rights The University of Texas and Texas Tech will be playing this weekend for interstate bragging rights. UT has yet to face Texas A&M, but if Tech beats the Longhorns it will have earned bragging rights in the state of Texas for the sec ond straight year. The No. 6 Longhorns (8-2, 5- 1 Big 12) will have home field advantage this year and the bitter taste of defeat is still lingering after Kliff Kingsbury guided the Red Raiders (7-3, 4-2 Big 12) to a 42-38 victory last year in Lubbock. Texas will also be playing for valuable BCS points and is currently fifth in the BCS standings. This year, however, first- year starters B.J. Symons and Vincent Young have picked up where their predecessors Kingsbury and Chris Simms, respectively, left off. Symons has already thrown for 4,721 and 44 touchdowns. Last week against Baylor, Symons threw for 428 yards and seven touchdowns. Symons has thrown to 15 dif ferent receivers this year, which will make it tough for Texas to key in on any one target. If any thing, Symons will need to use his discretion against the Longhorn defense as it has already racked up seven touch downs this year. TRAVEL “‘Act Now! Book 11 people, get 12th trip free. Continued from page IB 91.5 percent from the free throw line. He made 49.3 percent of his 3-pointers in conference play, rank ing second in the California junior college ranks behind current A&M teammate Kevin Turner, who played at Fullerton College. Ayala is rated as the fifth-best JUCO wing guard in the country by Lindy’s College Basketball and is listed as the fourth-best JUCO shooting guard by NBADraft.net. He was a first-team preseason all conference pick last season before breaking his hand. Ayala also was recruited by Oregon State, UNLV and Texas-El Paso. “Miguel is a very mentally tough player,” Watkins said. “He has the ability to shoot from the perimeter but because of his height he can also play inside.” Jones, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward/center, is rated as the 40th best prospect in the nation by The Sporting News and is rated 48th nationally by Bob Gibbons’ All-Star Report, which also tabs him as the 10th best high school center. As a junior, Jones averaged 18.9 points, 14.7 rebounds, 4.7 blocks and 3.1 steals while making 69.9 percent from the field and leading Normangee High School to a 30-2 record. Jones was named District 26-A’s most valuable player and was selected to the all region team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. He also was recruited by Kansas and Houston. “Joseph is a very good big man, which we really needed,” Watkins said. “We look for him to come in and make an immediate contribution to our program as a freshman.” White, a 6-foot-2 guard, was the top class 5A scorer in the Dallas area as a junior, averaging a whopping 28.6 points per game at Molina High School. He scored more than 20 points in 22 games and had more than 30 points 16 times, including a high of 42. He is rated as the ninth-best prospect in the state by Texas Hoops. “Kenneth is an excellent combination guard,” Watkins said. “He has an unbelievable knack for putting the ball in the basket.
