U.S. AIR FORCE CROSS INTO THE BLUE 4A Thursday, October 23, 2003 AGGIELIFE THE BATTALION David Gest, alleging assault, sues Liza Minnelli for $10 million NEW YORK (AP) — Producer David Gest sued Liza Minnelli for $10 million Tuesday, accusing his estranged wife of alcohol-fueled vio lence that caused neurological damage and headaches. Gest, 50, alleges in court papers that Minnelli, 57, flew into drunken rages on several occasions on both sides of the Atlantic, insulting and strik ing him. Liz Rosenberg, a spokeswoman for the singer, said Minnelli had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment. Minnelli’s lawyer, Allen Arrow, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Minnelli and Gest separated in July, just 16 months after they wed at a celebrity-studded cere mony that featured best man Michael Jackson car rying the bride’s train. Elizabeth Taylor served as maid of honor. In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Gest alleges that Minnelli began battering him before the wedding. Gest’s lawyer, Raoul Felder, said his client suf fered neurological damage and headaches from the alleged attacks, and is staying at a rehabilita tion clinic in Honolulu. In one incident last June in London, conn papers allege Minnelli consumed a bottle of vodka before she threw a lamp at Gest in their hotel suite, She later “began beating (Gest) about the head and face with her fists,’’ the lawsuit said. When Gest asked a security guard to intervene, court papers say Minnelli punched him in the stomach. When the couple married in March 2002, attendees said Minnelli danced in happiness at the altar. Hundreds of fans lined Fifth Avenuelo watch guests including actors Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins and David Hasselhoff, rocker Elton John and TV news personality Barbara Walters arrive in limousines. The wedding marked a personal comeback for Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli. She has won an Academy Award, an Emmy, two Golden Globes and three Tony Awards but also battled sub stance abuse, weight gain, and a near-fatal boul with encephalitis. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Rahman to compose "Lord of the Rings"musical LONDON (AP) — Indian composer A.R. Rahman and a Finnish folk troupe have been com missioned to write songs for a musical stage ver sion of “The Lord of the Rings,” the show’s pro ducer announced Tuesday. Rahman, a veteran Bollywood songwriter who scored the Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musi cal “Bombay Dreams,” will collaborate with the group Varttina on the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy, which has spawned a hit film series. “We are recreating Middle-earth and we need ed the music that goes with it to be unique,” said Kevin Wallace, who’s producing the West End show. “A.R. Rahman writes brilliant melodies with an exotic quality and we know he will write some thing which audiences will adore.” Tolkien is thought to have drawn on the Finnish folk epic the “Kalevala” to create the world of Middle-earth and the story of a hero’s quest for a magical ring. The Finnish language inspired the Elvish tongue of Tolkien’s trilogy. The “Lord of the Rings” musical is scheduled to open in London in spring 2005. Wallace has said the production is budgeted at $13 million, which would make it the most expensive musical in West End history.
