AGGIELIFE Monday, October 20, 2003 THE BATTALION ))) FEEL THE M £L Music Review V2, Los Lonely Boys 'Los Lonely Boys' Independent <D O O O ® The story of the little band that started out with three brothers from San Angelo, Texas — Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza — comprises the tale of Los Lonely Boys. The band’s first musical endeavor is its self-titled release. Los Lonely Boys plays music that does not allow you to sit still. Trying to place them in a musical category is impossible. They describe themselves as “a cross between Stevie Ray meets Santana, Jimi Hendrix meets Richie Valens or the Beatles meet Ronnie Milsap. Call it the music bur- rito theory.” The music is pretty impressive. What stands out are the amazing solos on guitar. Henry Garza plays beautifully and with confidence. The amazement doesn’t stop there. All three members sing great harmonies. The drumming is great, and the bass has a life of its own. Mixing in a little Spanish at times, Los Lonely Boys have taken everything they have ever heard and liked, and put it together to make a sound all their own while deeply rooted in Texas. The slower songs on the CD are noteworthy as well, but at times lack the energy and passion that the up-tempo tracks contain. “More than Love” and “Hollywood” are also some of the more notable songs. In a few amazing songs, the three brothers demonstrate the majority of their excellent musical talents. The jammin’ tracks “Onda” and “Senority” really show what Los Lonely Boys can do. “Los Lonely Boys” is an amazing CD and is worth the money. The group crosses many genres, and the eclectic listener will be blown away. Willie Nelson called Los Lonely Boys his “favorite Texas band.” They have earned that title and hopefully they will earn the ears of the world. sounds like a fusion of Good Charlotte, Blink 182 and New Found Glory, and is almost completeli devoid of MXPX’s signature touches. One of the few ballads, “Quite Your Life,”mat be the first MXPX song that involves violins ani strings.“More Everything,” “Kings oi Hollywood,” “On the Outs” and “Everythin! Sucks (When You’re Gone)” are just a few mort tracks that do not fit the MXPX that punk rod fans know and loved. Many bands change their sounds as they mature. It would not be fair to expect MXPX not to, but “Before Everything & After” sounds as though it was not written by the same band. Lead singer Mike Herrera’s voice has always been a distinct beacon on MXPX’s previous albums. On “Before Everything & After,” his voice sounds overproduced, fake and unemotional. The drumming sounds great at certain points, but slower tempo songs prevent him from exhibit ing his exquisite punk drumming. This is a new direction for MXPX. Get ready for a new explosion of MXPX fans as this album is more pop culture friendly and much more accessible to the average listener than its previous compilations. This CD is not bad ... OK, it’s bad and it does not sound like an MXPX manifesto. -Daniel Chapman Ui Music Review V 2.01)2 New Automatic This Defining Moment' Independent — Daniel Chapman MXPX 'Before Eveiything & After' A&M Records r;-' 2 - What will we do with all the screaming MXPX fans now that their favorite punk band has finally washed up and decided to sing from its pocketbook and not from its heart? The band that once symbolized rebellion and a break from the mainstream has produced a clean, neat “boy band” image on its latest CD, with a sound to match. MXPX has been known for its distinct sound. The band has been successful for its loud and fast music with hidden yet meaningful lyrics. Its latest release, “Before Everything & After,” Hailing from La Grange, Texas, New Automatic’s second album, “This defining Moment” can be summed up in one word: slop- py.This CD is reminiscent of Blink 182’s early CDs “The Cheshire Cat” and “The Buddha Album.” New Automatic’s sound is not tight, as it misses notes and cracks harmonies which, at times, makes listening to the songs difficult. The album begins with a promising song called “This Defining Moment,” which starts off with acoustic guitars and one voice, but loses everything when the rest of the instrumentation kicks in. The songs on the album don’t stay on beat, there are missed notes and the harmonies are not on target. New Automatic goes all out with its songs “Polarity,” Breaking Off,” “This Defining Moment” and “Wearing the Crown,” but misses became of bad production and a general inac tion to good recording with a solid sound. The scattered lyrics and musical structure make some tracks seem as if they were written by a three-month infant suffering from extreme A.D.D. One plus is the drumming of Mike which is insanely fast and good. Most of the songs are fun, upbeat tunes, anyone who’s not a fan of early punk music stay away from this album. Despite its dismal recording, New Automatic is great to watch live. When the band comes through College Station, go and enjoy the energetic show, but buy a T-shirt instead of the CD. -Daniel Chapman ★ Make it stop, my ears are bleeding!!; Don’t waste your hard drive space fs CnCrCr Download it Burn your friend’s copy Spend the dough, buy your own nir Buy it, burn it, tell a friend Her ideas created the new Explorer SportTrac. And a media frenzy. She wanted to develop new materials for automotive uses. She ended up developing a brand new automotive category. Candy's ideas played a key role in the development of the tonneau cover for the all-new Explorer SportTrac. She worked with suppliers to develop the concept. She designed the parts. She conducted testing. And she even worked with Ford assembly on installation. And when the SportTrac was introduced to the world, so was Candy. The media actually mentioned her by name in several publications. Of course, at Ford Motor Company we’ve always believed that credit should go where credit is due.
