BY: mi. uw NEWS IN BRIEF Matthew Shepard death remembered LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Five years ago Tuesday, a gay college freshman named Matthew Shepard was tied to a fence and beaten into a coma. His death five days later left Peter Moran shaken about the community of 27,000 where he grew up. Today, Laramie seems to be more tolerant and under standing of gays. There are seminars on homosexual issues, diversity workshops and an annual walk to raise money for AIDS/HIV organi zations. Gay Awareness Week has turned into Gay Awareness Month, and the university is supporting the Rainbow Resource Center, where gay students can hang out. Shepard was attacked by two men he met in a bar. They talked him into their pickup truck and drove him to a sheep ranch, where they tied him with clothes line to a log fence. Using their fists and the butt of a pistol, the assailants struck Shepard at least 18 times, then robbed him of $20 and his shoes, so he couldn’t walk back to town. The attackers were caught, convicted and sen tenced to life in prison. Legislature would have to vote to delay the primary, or change the filing deadlines. “(Craddick is) pretty happy with what he’s got right now," said Craddick spokesman Bob Richter. “He acknowledges that there’s two counties that are still a problem. One is Eastland, one is Deaf Smith. But they feel like they are real close.” Before leaving the Capitol on Tuesday for an East Texas speaking engagement, Dewhursi also said negotiators were wiite one to two counties away font an agreement. “We’re so close, we-reaJly ought to get a deal some time today, this evening, early tomor row morning,” Dewhurst said. The Legislature is scheduled to meet Wednesday. Richter said Craddick hoped to have a plan by Tuesday night and have the House formally vote on it Thursday. Richter said there is concern that some legislators might not show up Friday because of the weekend football game in Dallas between Texas and Oklahoma. CHARLES C. SCHROEPPEL, O.D.,P.C.
