J SPORTS THE BATTALION Higgins Continued from page 5 a former all-state player at Berkner High School in Richardson. “He’s changed my outlook on a lot of different circumstances in golf.” Schultz joins a veteran A&M roster that boasts six players with at least one year of experience, including the team's three senior captains: David Tasker, Stephen Reed and Parker Briley. Higgins said the senior trio improved throughout last sea son and has the potential to earn all-conference and even All-American honors. Tasker, Reed and Parker have accepted Higgins’ chal lenge of playing like there’s no tomorrow, since the seniors have one last shot at contending fora national title. “He’s talked to us about this (being) our last year,” said Tasker, who led A& M last sea son with a 73.31 scoring aver age and was named to the PlNG All-South Central 7 Friday, September 12, 2003 Region Team. “We’re not going to have another chance to do the things we want to do. He’s putting emphasis on us to come out and carry the load and play like this is our last time. “The three of us, we’re pumped. We’re ready to go out there and kick some butt this year. He’s got us fired up.” Sophomore Andrew Farr may also be ready for a breakout year after posting the fourth- best scoring average on the team as a true freshman last season. “He's worked hard on his game over the summer and his swing is really compact and strong,” Higgins said. “I think he’s going to make a huge impact for us this year." After a solid week of prac tice, Higgins said his players are prepared for Friday’s open er in Albuquerque, where the team’s quest to rank among the nation’s elite begins. “We play against most of the best teams in the nation week in and week out. and 1 think that we’re ready to take that next step and compete against those teams,” Higgins said. The Montreal Alouettes own the CFL rights to the suspend ed Ohio State running back, but general manager Jim Popp won’t pick up the phone to start negotiations. “If he has any intent of giving up college — hires an agent and automatically becomes a professional — or it is deemed he can’t play in college any more ... then this organization will wait for him to contact us,” Popp said Thursday. Indeed, Popp thinks Clarett should stay in school and weather the season-long penal ty handed down Wednesday. Texans run defense not getting a break HOUSTON (AP) — The Texans defense gets no chance to breathe easy even after warding off a superstar like Ricky Williams. Houston’s next nine games offer a who’s who of NFL rush ers: Deuce McAllister, Priest Holmes, Fred Taylor, Eddie George, Curtis Martin, Edgerrin James, Stephen Davis, Corey Dillon and Travis Henry. Each of the group has had at least one 1,300-yard sea son, and together they account for 20. Some — such as Jacksonville’s Taylor and Indianapolis’ James — have been slowed by injuries in the past, but all are considered healthy as this season gets going. ^ % If y — /' V Mr A V A' y/ p\u PLAT I N U M “Never cease to amaze her.
