The smaller budgets of these schools make traveling less feasible, hence Brimer’s deci sion to look into the reestab lishment of the SWC. But Brimer is not looking to bring back the exact same SWC. “We are striving for a brand new Southwestern Conference,” said Jay Pritchard, Brimer’s legislative aid. “We are looking at bring ing in a few out-of-state col leges in the area, like Tulane and Tulsa.” Bigger schools such as A&M and UT are not being considered for this conference, but schools such as TCU, SMU, Rice, UNT, Texas Tech and Houston are, Pritchard said. The pulling of such schools as Texas Tech and Baylor from the Big 12 would impact the remaining 10 schools. NCAA rules state that to have a cham pionship game, there must be 12 schools in the conference. Championship games produce large revenues that in turn fund athletic programs. According to the Ohio State Buckeye Buzz, the Atlantic Athletic Conference has asked the NCAA to change this rule, which will be voted on in April 2004. If the vote does not go through, the Big 12 may have to find two replacement schools if Texas Tech and Baylor join the SWC. Aside from that, A&M ath letics will not be affected. Although Baylor is being considered for placement in the SWC, Baylor Assistant Media Director Larry Little said the school is very committed to the Big 12. “We’ve gotten nothing but support from the Big 12 itself and fellow members, so I do not see why there would be any change in that. Little said. A&M Associate Athletic Director Alan Cannon said there were no formal discus sions of any team leaving or joining the conference during Big 12 meetings he attended this summer. “Right now the Big 12 is one of the top conferences in the country and everyone is moving forward,” Cannon said.
