The Oldsmobile was completely crushed all the way into the driver’s seat. They hit almost 100 percent head-on. They didn’t rebound very much,” Denholm said. Denholm said Mayes had a clean driving record, but the driver of the SUV had a suspend ed license for failing to have liability insurance. Mayes and four of the nine people in the SUV were killed. One of the dead was an infant. Denholm said the crash occurred less than five miles away from where a similar wrong-way crash in February 2002 killed five. Memorial Hermann Hospital spokeswoman Melissa Pena could not provide ages or names Wednesday morning but said the hospital had three in critical con dition, one in fair condition and one in serious condition. On Monday, police found the children and Children’s Protective Services took them into custody, the Houston Chronicle reports in its Wednesday editions. I Their mother, Laura Gutierrez, was in the Harris County Jail on Tuesday evening in lieu of $2,000 bail. I The landlady and her 18-year-old son heard the children crying and told police they hadn’t seen her since about 9 p.m. Sunday.
