DALLAS (AP) — It took the shin)
burn scars on his forearms and the
deaths of his wife and daughter ina
traffic accident with a drunken drivei
to convince Carlos Ybarra that he
himself shouldn't drink and drive.
Federal, state and local officials
are hoping a strong injection of HI
ads and intensified enforcement of
drunken driving laws around the
Fourth of July holiday will have the
same effect on Texas drivers.
Ybarra and his two sons, Junior
13, and Mario, 6, were the only sur
vivors when a drunken driverhitthe
family’s car in May 2002. His 29-
year-old wife Leona, whom he calls
his “right-hand man,” was believed
to be killed instantly and 1-year-old
Ariel was burned alive, Ybarra said-
The 33-year-old father and some
of his friends used to drink and
drive, he said, but the accident
changed everything.
“You don’t think and then when
you finally realize, you cause an
accident, you cause a death, or you
injure yourself,” he said. “This
whole thing has just opened m)
eyes to a whole new life.”
Ybarra spoke at a news confer
ence Tuesday to promote the
national crackdown, which runs
through July 13.
In a first-time effort, the National
Highway Traffic . Safety
Administration is spending $11 mil
lion on English and Spanish ads
nationwide, but Texas is a special tar
get, said Marilena Amoni, the admin
istration’s associate administrator in
the Office of Program Development.
