Krueger, a senior mechanical engineering major and operations officer for the Corps of Cadets, is one of IOO cadets who vol unteered for the Summer Recruiting Company, which helps recruit incoming fresh men to the Corps. Every summer, at least three cadets from each company volun teer to stay in College Station and participate in various activities to welcome and recruit incoming fresh men. While most cadets enjoy the sum mer break to live in an apartment, the SRC requires at least two cadets from each outfit to live in the dorms. The cadets are also required to wear their uniform at least twice a week. When asked if it was hot, Krueger replied with a sigh, but remained posi tive. “It’s a great time to learn how to use the buses,” Krueger said. To non-regs, it may seem as if the SRC makes a tremendous sacrifice of its time and comfort, but the cadets say it is all about how you look at it. “1 guess you could say it is (a sacri fice), but it’s what we want to do,” said Eric Brown, a senior German major. “And that’s why most people are here, it’s what they want to do: keep the Corps going. Without people we don’t exist, so we need to make sure our numbers are steady.” Cadets in the SRC host and attend events to recruit their goal of 900 fresh men. Such events include the Open House Welcome Program, Orientation Housing Meetings, Blinn Team and Transfer Student Conferences and Spend the Day with the Corps, a short er version of Spend the Night with the Corps. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the SRC hosts free lunches in the Memorial Student Center for the New Student Conferences to give students and parents a chance to talk with cur rent Corps members and ask questions. “It’s mostly for the parents,” said Bobby Roggenbuck, a senior environ mental design major. “It’s to ease their mind, and to have a question-and- answer cadets who will be taking care of their son or daughter.” The informal lunches also offer the oppor tunity for prospective cadets to relax over pizza and pasta, ask questions and meet their new class and the upperclassmen that may be in their outfit. “This is a chance for everyone to get to know their buddies and the people in their new class,” Krueger said. “Everyone’s invited whether they join the Corps or not.” For Roggenbuck, the best part of being in the SRC is meeting the new cadets in the relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. “At this time, it’s not a big shock for them coming in,” he said. “We don’t have our game faces on.” When Freshman Orientation Week begins the week before fall classes, the freshmen will undergo rigorous train ing in the Corps. But Krueger said that during the summer, everyone is on the same level. “They are considered recruits right now,” he said, “not freshmen.” Adam Collins, a recruit from Ross S. Sterling High School in Baytown, said he has not felt intimidated yet because of the welcome he has received from the SRC. “Every time you walk in the door, there’s always someone firmly shaking your hand,” he said. Collins decided to be in the Corps after he saw its teamwork and cama raderie during the Spend the Night with the Corps program. Collins said he knows the work will be hard, but he wants the discipline it will teach him. “I want to do big things in my life,” Collins said. “And if I try to do it on my own, I might get lazy. But the Corps won’t let you get lazy, and I look for ward to that challenge.” IVAN FLORES • THE BATTALION A good life just got better at... i Willowick Apartments We have exceptional service, great neighbors, convenient location, and the best value in town.
