AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Detroit hired Hall of Famer Larry Brown to make a good team better. Brown was introduced as the Pistons’ coach Monday, two days after Rick Carlisle was fired and one year after Carlisle was the NBA’s Coach of the Year. Brown, 62, inherits a 50-win team that has a talented, young nucleus and holds the No. 2 pick in the June 26 draft. “He is the pre-eminent coach in the league to me,” said Joe Dumars, team president of bas ketball operations. Brown, who resigned as 76ers coach on May 26 after six seasons, will be paid $25 mil lion over five years, according to a source within the NBA who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Brown was released from a contractual clause that prohibit ed him from coaching another NBA team if he left Philadelphia prematurely. “This is a team 1 admired from afar,” Brown said Monday. “I promise you this: Every time we step out on the court, we’ll represent this franchise the way it’s supposed to be repre sented,” he said. “You won’t be embarrassed by the effort.” Dumars first contacted Brown’s agent Joe Glass on Friday night, and the deal was done by Saturday around 6 p.m. Carlisle was fired Saturday after leading Detroit to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 1991. He was fired with one year and $2 million left on his contract despite winning two straight division titles and 100 regular- season games. He said Monday that he plans to pursue coaching jobs this week during the NBA’s predraft camp. “I’m going to talk to two teams in Chicago about potential opportunities, and I’m excited about that,” Carlisle said, less than an hour before Brown was announced as his successor. Brown had two years left in his contract that paid him $6 mil lion per season in Philadelphia. “We want to be successful for every year for a long, long time,” Brown said. “Every year, come playoff time, we want to have an honest chance to win a championship.” Brown also coached Denver (five years), Indiana (four years), San Antonio (3 1/2 years). New Jersey (two years), Carolina of the ABA (two years) and the Clippers (18 months). He has an 879-685 record in the NBA, and is 1,285-853 over all, including the ABA and col- Brown’s in Larry Brown has been selected as the Detroit Pistons' new head coach for a $25 million, five-yeai deal. IRVING, Texas — Bill Parcells won’t say he’s comfortable with the Dallas Cowboys’ quarter back situation, but the coach insisted Monday that Chad Hutchinson or Quincy Carter will be the starter this fall. Not Brian Griese or anybody else from outside the organization. , . , “We are going to go the way we are. If there was somebody we were interested in, I’d tell you,” Parcells said. “Right now, we’ll go with who we’ve got.” Griese became available Monday when he was cut by Denver after four seasons as the starter there. The Broncos signed free agent Jake Plummer to a seven-year deal in March. There has been speculation since Parcells became the Cowboys’ coach in January that he might look for a veteran quarterback, much like he did when he acquired Vinny Testaverde while with the New York Jets. Griese, a past Pro Bowler, seemed the logical choice. Griese’s agent, Ralph Cindrich, has said the quar terback could end up in Dallas or in Miami, where his father, Hall of Famer Bob Griese, played there. “I’m not going to be involved with Brian Griese, Parcells said. Owner Jerry Jones said there were several reasons the Cowboys weren’t really interested in Griese. “We’ve got repetition considerations. Ifweaddi quarterback right now, then we’ve got rep problems as far as getting the guys ready that we have,” Jons said Monday. “That also implies that the guys weV got here might not be what we want, and that’si the case.” > “I have to be equitable with these guys and{»i 1 D uring 2003 them an equal chance,” Parcells said. “I don’t tlii you can just say this guy is a starter. We are going!! let them fight it out at camp, and figure it out as as possible.” Hutchinson started the final nine games last sea son. As a 25-year-old rookie, who hadn’t | football in four years while pursing a career as fessional baseball pitcher, he completed 127of250 passes (51 percent) for 1,553 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. “The approach I’ve taken from day one is no mat ter who they bring in or what the situation is forme, I’ve got to handle my business the best I can, Hutchinson said. “This year, I feel a lot more com fortable, a lot more confident.’’ THE AGGIE OUTREACH PROGRAM The Association OF FORMER STUDENTS Contact Former Students to ask for their support of student scholarships & other student programs. The Physician Centre • 979-774-5933 3201 University Dr. E., Suite 475 Bryan, Texas 77802 HOUSTON — The Astrodome’s landlords put out the call Monday for anyone with ideas —- and the means to imple ment them — of how save the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The request for proposals, or REP, includes a June 16 tour of the world’s first indoor stadium, which has become a 38-year-old antique that hosts occasional high school football or baseball games or motocross and costs Harris County taxpayers about $1.5 million a year to keep cooled, lit and maintained. Minute Maid Park downtown took the stadium’s primary tenant, baseball’s Houston Astros, in 2000. In recent years the University of Houston returned to its on-campus stadium and new Reliant Stadium next door now hosts the NFL Houston Texans, the annual Houston rodeo and most other stadium-sized events once slated for the Astrodome. “Our hope is this process will find a solution where the past and future will work together,” said Mike Surface, chairman of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp., which oversees the county- owned Reliant Park complex that includes the Astrodome. Though the request is open to ideas for the stadium’s redevel opment, Surface said there are limits. Bidders must demon strate economic and structural feasibility and the plan cannot interfere with the leasehold rights of the Texans or the rodeo or duplicate other venues Reliant Park, such as the Relianl Center convention facility. Surface said he believes a multi-use plan, such as a hotel built inside the stadium along will) small “Branson, Missouri-type' concert halls and a horse arena to replace aging Reliant Arena, is possible. He expects any projects to cost between $100 million anti $500 million. The deadline for proposals is Aug. 8, but Houston-based restau rant magnate and develops Tilman Fertitta said Monday te was all ears. “We’re going to look at the REP, (but) we don’t know what they’re asking for and what the economics are,” said Fertitta, chairman and chief executive of Landry’s Restaurants Inc. “We’re very creative, so you never know.” Fertitta, who like Surface is a native of the area, said it’s impor tant to try to keep Houston’s most well-known landmark intact, “But if it doesn’t work, il doesn’t work,” Fertitta said of potential proposals. “You can't let it sit there and take a couple of million dollars a year to keep it standing there.” Fertitta has experience in sim ilar projects. He transformed a wharf in nearby Kemah into a restaurant-based tourism hub, turned an old downtown Houston firehouse into a new aquarium and is converting an abandoned downtown into a luxury hotel across Minute Maid Park. mem House of Re boarded busi state.
