American Airlines is prepared to
file for bankruptcy Thursday if it
is unable to salvage cost-cutting
deals jeopardized by employee
anger over executive perks,
according to two elected offi
cials who met with management
and labor leaders Wednesday.
The labor unrest has also
increased pressure on the com
pany’s board of directors to
remove chairman and chief
executive Donald J. Carty, ana
lysts said. The board is sched
uled to meet Thursday.
American reported a $1.04
billion first quarter loss on
Wednesday as executives nego
tiated all day and into the night
with labor leaders and four
Texas congressmen to hammer
out a deal and ward off
Chapter 11.
Workers and union leaders
remain outraged after learning
late last week that American had
approved executive bonuses and
pension payments that would be
protected in bankruptcy; early
last week the unions agreed to
$1.8 billion in annual cuts. Now,
two out of three key unions want
to vote again on the concessions.
