“We would have gotten more data, had
(the shuttle) made it back, but we had
enough information to validate the ideas a
success,” said John Junkins, the creator of
the project and a distinguished professor
of aerospace engineering at A&M.
At the time of the explosion, a student
working on the experiment was en route to
Johnson Space Center to retrieve the com
puter used to track data, Boyle said. But
NASA officials have kept the computer for
further investigation into the explosion, he
said.
Puente said working with the NASA
astronauts and controllers reminded her of
the friendly environment at A&M. During
the mission, Puente was able to see the
astronauts in action and hear conversations
between them.
Prior to the launch on Jan. 16, Puente
spoke to the seven astronauts, briefing
them on the star tracker experiment, which
is required before any space mission.
“They were very humble and nice,” she
said. “It was great to see them in space and
listen to their conversations throughout the
mission.”
