Smith, Missouri's quarter back, made one big play after another Saturday night, run ning for 213 yards and two touchdowns and throwing for 178 and a score as the Tigers scared the second-ranked Sooners before losing 31-24. “We played really well at times,” co-defensive coordina tor Mike Stoops said Sunday. “You take away some of the missed tackles and we feel good about what we did. We're certainly not concerned about our defense, that’s for sure.” Stoops said 78 of Smith’s rushing yards came on scram bles. The rest came via designed plays, draws and counters that often went for good gains. Smith’s two touch down runs were both from 25 yards out. “We’ve played guys in the quarterback run game,” Stoops said. “I guess the thing that’s surprising to us is they went to that exclusively as their run game. They had run the ball dif ferently on a lot of people. But that gave them an opportunity to get hat on hat and give the quarterback a chance to do his thing, and he did a great job.” Smith’s big night doesn’t have Oklahoma’s coaches wringing their hands as the Sooners (5-0, 1-0) prepare for this week’s showdown with No. 3 Texas. Head coach Bob Stoops reminded that last sea son, Kansas State had 446 yards and scored 37 points against the Sooners. One week later, the Sooners held Texas to 225 yards and three points. ii You take away some of the missed tackles and we feel good about what we did. The Aggies will try to improve their play and build on the performance of senior Shaun Helme, who finished second in windy conditions in Kansas. Along with Helme, the Aggies will also bring team captains Stephen Reed and David Tasker to Rhode Island in an attempt to bring consistency to the team. "We have played good golf at times, but we haven't been as consistent as we would like to be," said head golf coach J.T. Higgins. "This is a good tournament that gives us an opportunity to see where we are at as we continue our fall schedule." After three tournaments this fall, the Aggies have yet to break the mold with an impressive showing, but Higgins is not ready to throw in the towel on the season yet. "It is early in the year and we are trying not to put too much pressure on it, just work on our game and our composure," Higgins said. The Adams Cup of Newport will consist of 36 holes on Tuesday and finish with 18 holes on Wednesday in Newport, Rhode Island.
