Train derails in Inc Luxury train jumps tracks, at least 80 left^ RAFIGANJ. India (AP) — Rescuers recovered 67 bodies Tuesday and 13 of the injured died after a luxury train jumped the tracks while crossing a bridge in the remote countryside in eastern India. One car plunged 300 feet into a river and two others hung perilously from the colonial-era structure. The Rajdhani Express, a lux ury air conditioned train, became a pile of twisted metal minutes after it derailed on the bridge in Bihar state Monday night. Besides the at least 80 confirmed deaths, authorities said more than 170 passengers were injured. K.K. Saxena, a top railway official in the region, told reporters one of the train cars remained to be searched and workers were using cutting torches to open it. “My foot is trapped. 1 can't move it. Please take me out or I will die,” a trapped passenger could be heard to plead as res cuers worked to open the car. The train was carrying 535 passengers and 70 railway staff when it jumped the tracks short ly before midnight Monday. It was traveling about 80 mph at the time of the accident 420 miles southeast of New Delhi, the capital. In Patna, the Bihar state cap ital, and in New Delhi, politi cians criticized railway officials for poorly maintaining the 86- year-old bridge, built by the British when they ruled India. Railway officials denied the charges. Some opposition polm cians called for the railroad min ister to resign, but his department said the derailment was an act of sabotage, perhaps the work of anti-government militants. “The bridge was poorly maintained.’ said Laloo Prasad Yadav, president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal party that governs Bihar. India has more than 120,000 steel railway bridges and nearly half were built a century ago. After a 1998 train collision that killed 210 people, an investiga tive panel sought the urgent replacement of 526 extremely weak bridges, identified as "dis tressed." The bridge over the Dhave River, location of the derailment Monday, was not among them. The aging bridges were “ticking time bombs.' icttred railway safety official K.J. Diwakar told Press Trust of India. India’s state railway system runs 7,000 passenger trains a day on 66,875 miles of track — the longest network outside China. It reports about 300 acci dents a year, two-thirds of them blamed on worker negligence. o ,eren I i*y -K'- THE ime I y resc uers cui; unchecked car, otv the darkened uindi>, rods, calling out • ^ Anns doctors tx» injured.
