L. TartllM.aM5LSiiiMM Thursday, July 25, 2002 Music Review V 2.002 Our Lady Peace Gravity Sony Music Our Lady Peace made a splash on the music scene when it released the highly anticipated new album. Gravity. The last two albums released by Our Lady Peace struggled to meet the velocity and popularity that the 1997 release Clumsy generated, but Gravity may succeed where the others have failed. With the new guitar sound of Steve Mazur, Gravity starts off with hard rock sounds in “All for You.” Although the tempo is slow, the sound is heavy as Mazur pumps out hard guitar riffs to match Michael Maida’s sorrowful lyrics. Many of the songs sound both dramatic and intense. The / popular song “Somewhere Out There” is one of the lighter songs on the album, utilizing Maida’s mel low voice with the sweet sound of the acoustic guitar before the chorus kicks in. The song brings a warm feeling to mind and many can relate to Maida’s lyrics of searching for the one they love. The somber feel created in “Somewhere Out There,” is carried over into “Not Enough” as it starts with a slow, clean and soft guitar part that slowly gains momentum. Many of Gravity’s songs fol low this same pattern. “Sorry” is a quick paced song that adds a much needed contrast to the overly slow tempos of other songs. The fast and catchy, “Sorry” is a flashback from the hit album Clumsy. Contrasting with the solemn vibe of the rest of the album, “Sorry” and “Innocent” are relatively upbeat in sound, although Maida’s lyrics still seem trou bled.
