PHILADELPHIA (AP) Philadelphia 76ers coach Larry Brown was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The Hall of Fame announced Brown’s election in Los Angeles before the start of Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The 61-year-old Brown has won more than 1,200 games in 30 seasons, including the American Basketball Association and col lege. He won an NCAA title at Kansas in 1988 and led the Sixers to the Finals last season after winning coach of the year honors for the First time in his NBA career. Brown, a Finalist for the nom ination last year, got the required 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee this year. Brown completed his Fifth season with the Sixers last month, his longest tenure with any team in 19 years in the NBA. He coached Five seasons at Kansas from 1983-1988, before leaving for San Antonio. A consummate teacher who preaches defense. Brown has posted a winning record in 26 of his 30 seasons. His record in the NBA is 831-651. He was 229- 107 in the ABA, and 177-61 in college. That is both a blessing and a curse. It has bought the U.S. effort time — to benefit from the development of a league of our own, to benefit from the opportu nities abroad afforded a few Americans playing in the top European leagues, time to scout, nurture and forge emerging tal ent into a cohesive unit. But that lack of urgency is why U.S. coach Bruce Arena sounds conflicted much of the time. He is astute enough to know the impressive strides the U.S. program has made in the past dozen years. But he also knows better than anybody else how much further there is to go. That is why one minute. Arena will complain about a lack of support, “The magnitude of this event is not understood by the American public.” Then, quickly, he will catch himself and say, “If I say anything, it sounds like sour grapes.” Arena understands what few of his countrymen do. This team is better — better prepared, better coached, tougher, faster, more skillful, experienced and commit- ted — than any team the United States has Fielded. But it will still need luck to enlarge the small dent it just registered in America’s sporting consciousness. Being a heavy underdog against Portugal was one thing.
