Space shuttle lands SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) — Space shuttle Atlantis arrived at the international space station on Wednesday, bringing a girder that will be the back bone for further construction. The two spacecraft linked up as they sailed more than 240 miles above China. The space station astronauts rang their ship’s bell as Atlantis docked, to mark the shuttle’s arrival in the tradition of the high seas. “You all do make a pretty sight there,” space station resi dent Carl Walz radioed as the shuttle drew within 300 feet. “It’s good to see you guys,” shuttle commander Michael Bloomfield replied as he steered his ship in. Atlantis will spend a full week docked at the space station. On Thursday, astronaut Ellen Ochoa will use Atlantis’ robot arm to place a 44-foot-long, 14 1/2-foot-wide aluminum girder that is full of plumbing and wiring onto the space station. Then two teams of spacewalkers will take turns over several days latching the truss segment — one of the space station’s most complex pieces — and making power and data connections. Ochoa said she wasn’t too nervous about handling the $600 million girder, the first piece of a framework that ultimately will be longer than a football field. “The training I think has prepared us very well for it,” she said. The girder will serve as the foundation for a framework that will extend 356 feet and support a collection of giant solar wings and radiators. A $190 million railcar and track already are attached to the girder and will be used to transport the space station’s robot arm and cargo from one end of the complex to the other. Astronaut Jerry Ross will be performing two of the four spacewalks needed to fully install the girder. He already holds the U.S. spacewalking record, with seven outings. With Monday’s launch, he claimed another record: the first person to fly in space seven times. Alpha’s three-man crew has been living aboard the space sta tion since December and is set to return to Earth in June. Circumcision has benefits for women (AP) — Women whose sex partners are circumcised may be less likely to get cervical cancer, a study suggests. Cervical cancer is caused by the same virus responsible for genital warts. The study in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine found that men with intact foreskins were three times more likely than circumcised men to be infected with the human papillo mavirus. That, in turn, may increase the risk of passing the virus on to their sex partners. The theory is that the skin in the inner lining of the foreskin is especially vulnerable to the virus. “It will certainly fuel the ongoing debate about the merits of circumcision,” said Dr. Michael Thun, an American Cancer Society epidemiologist not involved in the study. He said it rais es the question of whether circumcision also can reduce the spread of AIDS. Studies dating back to at least 1988 have suggested that cir cumcision offers some protection against AIDS, but the research does not prove it and more definitive studies are under way. The cervical cancer study, conducted by researchers in Spain and four other countries, looked at nearly 3,800 women, half of whom had cervical cancer, half of whom were cancer-free. There was only a slight overall difference between the two groups in how many had circumcised partners and how many had uncircumcised ones. But the researchers found a strong difference in the risk of cer vical cancer when it came to women whose partners were espe cially active sexually. Women whose high-risk partners were not circumcised were five times more likely to get cancer than those whose partners were circumcised. High-risk men were defined as those who had at least six sex partners and started having sex before 17. Premium Student Housing Student housing is the single largest controllable college expense.
