SPORTS THE BATTALION 7 Monday, April 1, 2002 A&M swimers finish 21 st at NCAA’s, UT claims title Staff & Wire The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team closed out its 2001-02 season Saturday night with a 21st place finish at the NCAA Championships held in Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia. Texas, who entered the meet ranked third nationally, topped No. 1 Stanford by a score of 512 to 501 for its third straight, and 10th overall, national title. A&M scored all eight of its points on Saturday by virtue of a fifth-place finish in the conso lation final of the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Patrick Kennedy, Matt Rose, Robbie Taylor and Dan Blanchard took 13th overall after swimming a time of 2:57.09. The quartet swam 2:56.95, the 13th fastest time in the preliminaries, in order to qualify for the final. Kennedy, swimming the last meet of his collegiate career, just missed qualifying for the final in the 200 backstroke after swimming a seasonal-best time of 1:44.94. Kennedy was the first swimmer not taken to Saturday’s finals, missing the opportunity by just six-hun- dreths of a second. Senior All-American diver Jesse Even finished 21st in the platform diving competition after being in the hunt for a spot in the finals for most of the first half of the preliminar ies. Even ranked between sev enth and ninth place for each of the first four rounds before suf fering a score of 9.45 on his fifth dive which dropped him all the way to 17th. A score of 36.45 on his sixth dive dropped him to 21st place where he remained for the majority of the rest of the prelims. Sophomore All-American Matt Rose just missed qualify ing for finals after finishing 21st in the morning preliminar ies of the 100 freetyle in 43.85. Freshman Alfredo Jacobo claimed 30th in the 200 breast stroke in the morning prelimi naries. Jacobo neared his per sonal best of 2:00.98 by finish ing in 2:01.08. KRT CAMPUS Indiana guard Tom Coverdale talks with coach Mike Davis during practice at the Final Four in Atlanta. The Hoosiers defeated Oklahoma, 73-64, to reach tonight’s final against Maryland. how they’re playing now,” Williams said. “Any time a team plays team defense like they do, they have a chance to beat anybody.” The list of anybodys includes Duke. Indiana pulled off a stunning upset and ruined most pool f bracket sheets, beating the Blue Devils 74-73 in the regional semifinals. Maryland (31-4) didn’t surprise anybody with its wins. All-American Juan Dixon was his usual self in each, adding to his tournament run with 33 points in the 97-88 win over fellow top seed Kansas on Saturday night. The Terrapins held on after losing most of a 20-point lead over the final six minutes. Tournament Continued from page 5 15-for-19 they had from beyond the arc in the regional final win over Kent State. To win the last game the Hoosiers will need that 3-point shooting and solid inside play from Jared Jeffries and Jarrad Odle to offset the formi dable Maryland front line of Lonny Baxter, Chris Wilcox and Byron Mouton. “Any team that’s gotten to where Indiana has gotten, you don’t look at their record, you look at Waves Continued from page 5 No. 4. Matijevic improved to 14-2 in dual match play this season. Just minutes later, freshman Lester Cook fell to No. 55 senior Stefan Suter to give Pepperdine the 3-1 advantage. “We got down early in this one,” Cass said. “But I was proud that we were able to get ourselves back into the match. We lined up three guys that just came to us in January, and for the most part, I think they did a great job tonight against a Pepperdine team that was stacked with some older, more experienced guys.” Bauer pulled the Aggies within one with his 7-5, 6-3 win on court No. 6 while filling in for injured sophomore Khaled El Dorry. However, Garland shut the door on Newport on court No. 1 to clinch the victory. “I felt like I played pretty well in the second set,” Newport said. “I got a little more comfortable out there and, I was a little tired, but I felt like I really had a chance going into the third set. “I think [Garland] played well tonight and he was able to pick up his game there in the third [set]. But, we had a great crowd tonight, and it was a lot of fun, so I think even with the loss, playing a solid team like [Pepperdine] can do a lot for our team, especially the younger guys.” SALE sx, end of lose to ^ 097.
