Oscar thief sentenced to probation LOS ANGELES (AP) — A loading dock worker was sentenced to three years’ probation for the dieft of 55 Oscar statuettes just before the 2000 Academy Awards ceremony. Anthony Hart, 40, pleaded no contest Oct. 23 to felony receiving stolen property. Superi or Court Judge Terry A. Green also ordered him to pay $200 in restitution. Hart was a dockworker at Roadway Express in Bell, where die Oscars disappeared last year. Defense attorney Richard H. Millard said the charge against Hart can be lowered to a misdemeanor if his client remains crime- free for 18 months. Former Roadway Express truck driver Lawrence Ledent, 39, pleaded no contest in July 2000 to felony grand theft. He was sen tenced to six mondis in county jail, five years’ probation, and ordered to pay $51,000 in resti- tution. That amount included the $50,000 re ward that Akron, Ohio-based Roadway paid to the man who found 52 of the missing statuettes. On Nov. 16, the judge also sentenced John Willie Harris, 55, to six months in jail after he pleaded no contest to receiving stolen property. COMBS P. Diddy expected to sign child sup port settlement Friday NEW YORK (AP) — Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and model Kim Porter, the mother of his youngest child, have reached an agreement for support of their 3-year-old son. Terms of the settlement — which would provide for the child, Christian Casey Combs, until he reaches age 21 — were not disclosed in court docu ments. "I believe the matter is settled," Porter's lawyer, Suzanne Bracker, told hearing examiner David Kir- shblum in court Wednesday. "We have a gentlemen's agreement." The lawyers told Kirshblum they expect Combs and Porter to sign the agreement by Friday. In comments outside court, Bracker initially de scribed a settlement totaling more than $4.5 million over the years. But Combs' repre sentatives disputed that fig ure, calling it too high, and Bracker later said her com ments were misinterpreted. "The terms of the settle ment are private," Combs said in a statement. "The wel fare of my children is always my first priority, and whatev er I have, they have." Combs, 31, had been giv ing Porter, 30, a court-or dered $11,000 a month, said Bracker. Bracker estimated that Combs — who runs the Bad Boy Entertainment music publishing and recording company, has his own fashion line and owns several restau rants — earns several million dollars a year. Combs has another son, lustin, 6, by hip-hop fashion stylist Misa Hylton-Brim, of Mount Vernon, N.Y. Combs PEOPLE IN THE NEWS reportedly pays Hylton-Brim $5,000 a month as child sup port. Kirshblum adjourned the Combs-Porter case until March 4. Destiny's Child ladies to go 'independent' NEW YORK (AP) — The members of Destiny's Child plan to be "Independent Women" taking time off from the group to concentrate on solo projects. Already, lead singer Beyonce Knowles has a featured role in the upcoming "Austin Pow ers" sequel, and Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland have discussed solo albums. The Grammy-winning trio has been omnipresent over the last couple of years, with back-to-back multiplatinum albums, a string of hits, dolls made in their images, a re cent tour and a new holiday disc in stores. Knowles told the E! Enter tainment network that it's time for the group to go on hiatus, but they're not breaking up. "Destiny's Child put out four albums in four years, which is un believable. That doesn't happen a lot," she said. "We've been work ing, Kelly and I, since we were 9, nonstop. So I think Destiny's Child is going to take a little break." Patricia Arquette discourages hate crimes LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Patricia Arquette urged a group of high school students to break free from cliques and learn more about people of different races and religions. "Start making friends in all kinds of different places," the 33-year-old actress said. "Be- DESTINY’S CHILD come rich with yourself." Arquette, whose films in clude "True Romance" and "Stigmata," made a presenta tion Tuesday at Long Beach Poly High School. Her speech was part of a new program by the entertainment industry and the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission to discourage hate crimes. Besides school visits, Ar quette and other celebri ties will make public service announce ments. Ar quette, who was raised by a Muslim fa ther and a Jewish moth er, said she felt compelled to contact the commission and volunteer her time. "We all have similarities," she told the students. "If you all close your eyes, what col or's your blood, what color's your bones?" 'Helping Hands' auctions off celebrity items ARQUETTE NEW YORK (AP) — Hand crafted items by stars from movies, television, music and sports will be auctioned online to help victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "Helping Hands II: Hand made in America," through America Online and InStyle magazine, will raise money for those affected by the World Trade Center attacks. Among the items up for bids: a red, white and blue portrait of Courteney Cox Ar quette that her husband, David Arquette, painted; a football play that Dan Marino created, based on the Ameri can flag; and a red, white and blue Christmas ornament that John Travolta designed. Britney Spears, Edie Falco, James Gandolfini, Ricki Lake and Mark Wahlberg are among the other stars who donated pieces they made. The auction begins Dec. 12 and lasts through the end of the month. Fatigue, headaches and insomnia are things many stu dents may experience but may never consider as side effects of stress. Ashley Sleeth, a junior finance major, said there is a correlation between these signs and her stress level. “Even though it’s hard to notice at first, I can look back and see that the times that I can’t sleep or have bad headaches are the times that I’m anxious or worried about something that seems really important,” Sleeth said. According to Bender, signs of stress may also include loss of humor. “I’m the funny guy,” Bender said. “When I stop being the funny guy, I know something is wrong and so do my friends.”
