Smucker acquires Jif peanut butter CINCINNATI (AP) — It’s a $ 1 billion deal made in sandwich heaven: Peanut butter and jelly are getting hitched. The J.M. Smucker Co., which makes a wide variety of jams and jellies, is acquiring the Jif peanut butter brand from Procter & Gam ble Co. The purchase price for the deal, which also includes the Crisco cooking oil brand and Jif and Crisco manufacturing plants in Lexington, Ky., and Cincinnati, is $1 billion in stock. Smucker man agement said it plans to retain all employees at the plants. Investors found it a tasty com bination, pushing both stocks higher. Smucker, based in Orrville, said the deal will eventually al most triple its annual earnings and double annual sales to $ 1.3 billion. P&G, which has been getting rid of underperforming brands for seven years, had announced in April that it intended to swap or sell the Jif and Crisco brands. A.G. Lafley, P&G’s chief exec utive, has said cooking oils and peanut butter have become gener ic commodities in the eyes of con sumers, so the two brands did not show the prospects for sales in creases that P&G wanted. P&G stockholders will receive one share of J.M. Smucker stock for every 50 shares they hold in Procter & Gamble. Based on Smucker’s closing stock price Tuesday of $25.89 per share, that would value the deal at $1 billion. In midday trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Smucker shares climbed 16.8 per cent, or $4.36 a share, to $30.25 while P&G shares were up $1.43 a share to $73.97. J.M. Smucker was founded in 1897, when the company’s name sake and founder sold his first product — apple butter — from the back of a horse-drawn wagon. The company's products include fruit spreads, ice cream toppings and natural peanut butter. The family-run business has about 2,000 employees worldwide and distributes products in more than 70 countries. Procter & Gamble markets more than 250 brands including Pampers diapers. Tide detergent, Pantene shampoo. Bounty paper towels and Crest toothpaste. P&G employs nearly 106,000 people in more than 80 countries. MTV ad to battle anti-gay sentiment NEW YORK (AP) — Assert ing that more than 80 percent of gay students are harassed at their schools, an advocacy group joined Wednesday with MTV to release a series of public service ads aimed at countering antirgay_sen- timent among teens. The New York-based Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network said the ad campaign is the largest of its kind on any tele vision network, and will run at least four weeks, possibly longer. The first spot was timed to co incide with Wednesday night’s airing of "Hate in the Hallways,” an episode about anti-gay bullying on MTV’s new weekly documen tary series, “Criminal.” “MTV is playing a heroic role in helping us speak to young peo ple who are likely to either expe rience or perpetrate hate crimes,” said Jim Anderson, a spokesman for GLSEN. GLSEN also released findings of a nationwide survey it conduct ed earlier this year of 904 gay, les bian and bisexual students in mid dle and high schools. About 83 percent of the stu dents reported being verbally ha rassed in the past year because of their sexual orientation, and 21 percent reported being physically assaulted. More than 84 percent of the stu dents reported hearing anti-gay re marks often at school, and most said that faculty and staff rarely in tervened when overhearing such remarks. More than 23 percent said they sometimes heard anti gay comments from teachers and staff. Nearly 70 percent of the stu dents said they felt unsafe in their schools because of their sexual orientation, and more than 30 per cent said they had missed at least one day of classes in the past month because of their fears. “We hope these statistics and public service announcements will push young people to continue ex amining their own prejudices,” said Brian Graden, MTV’s president of programming. The 10-second public service ads give graphic depictions of ha rassment. In one, a male student finds a slur about his sexual orien tation carved into his desk; anoth er shows a lesbian student with a bruised and bloody face. MTV has tackled harassment of homosexuals before, notably with broadcasts and a public service ad prompted by the 1998 beating death of gay university student Matthew Shepard. “These new spots are much broader, and get at the terrifying normality of this abuse,” said MTV vice president Stephen Fried man. ’“It’s so gay’ has become an all-purpose insult at schools.” Bomb threat closes border HIGHGATE, Vt. (AP) — A bomb threat made to a business near the U.S.-Canada border and a suspicious vehicle prompted feder al officials to close two major bor der crossings Wednesday. Vehicles heading toward the ports of entry at Champlain, N.Y., U ’ The caller said ‘There’s a bomb that’s going to go boom. ’ — John Holzscheiter Deringer marketing VP and Highgate, Vt., were stopped by police Wednesday afternoon and directed to smaller border cross ings, said Craig Jehle, port director in Highgate. The call was made shortly be fore 9 a.m. to an office of De ringer, a customs broker and in ternational freight handler. ‘ ‘The caller said: ‘There’s a bomb that’s going to go boom,” ’ said John Holzscheiter, Deringer marketing vice president and co-owner. The company’s offices in Champlain, Highgate Springs and St. Albans were evacuated. Officials were investigating the threat Wednesday afternoon and could provide few details. The only thing they said about the suspicious vehicle is that it was near Highgate. “We’re waiting for things to get checked,” said Temple Black, a public affairs officer with the Im migration and Naturalization Ser vice in Burlington. Both of the closed border cross ings are busy ones involving Inter state highways, 87 on the New York side, 89 on the Vermont side. Also in Vermont, the owner of 14 hydroelectric plants along the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers posted armed guards this week af ter three suspicious men were spotted on a remote road near one plant over the weekend. Officer Mike Chesanek of the Bellows Falls police department, said the men spoke broken English and appeared to be from the Mid dle East or India. He asked them for identification, but did not de tain them. He said they told him they were looking for American Indian rock carvings that can be found in the area. m Texas A&M Athletics FRIDAY Soccer Iowa State SUNDAY Volleyball Nebraska (Defending National Champions) 2:00 p.m. ^ Wear Maroon ^ ^ on Sunday | 7 p.m Soccer c vs. s'— Nebraskappr ^ (Defending Big 12 Champions) 7:00 p.m. ^ I?# AqqirAthleria.com Afgi*Athletici.eam Tickets: 845-2311 This Rhone Is #1 Verizon Wireless Agent in Aggieland • FREE Hands Free Headset • FREE Voice Mail • FREE Caller ID S 3 Q95 S 5 Q95 Enjoy clear digital calling from Verizon Wireless.
