In an email to Rowan, Tom Fitzhugh, Class of ’71 and bene factor of the trip, expressed his dissatisfaction with Rowan’s behavior. Fitzhugh, a Houston attorney and prominent MSC fundraiser and donor, accompanied the three University staff members, five student leaders and 31 freshmen for one week of their stay in Italy. Rowan said the investigation was instigated by Fitzhugh and two MSC student leaders, Ben Moffitt and Barry Hammond, in an effort to remove him as MSC president. “Tom has an obsession about controlling the MSC. He tries to exert his influence, and when he doesn't get what he wants, he’ll step it up a level,” Rowan said. “Both of them (Moffitt and Hammond) aspire to certain positions and will do whatev er it takes to get there, even to the extent of saying things that aren’t true.” The Fitzhugh participants stayed at a study-abroad center in Castiglion Fiorentino, a village south of Florence, July 18 to Aug. 3. In addition to workshops and activities, the participants took trips to other sites in Italy, including Rome and Venice. An excerpt of Fitzhuhgh’s email to Rowan stated, “Your ‘per formance’ as a student leader on the CFIHLS trip was the most embarrassing any student leader has ever done in the 10 years of this program. Your behavior was, in a word, appalling. In those few lucid moments, when you were sober, you did well enough. However, your repeated violations of the rules about drinking in Castiglion Fiorentino and your encouragement/toleration of stu dents' breaking those rules alone were sufficient to justify your removal as a student leader in the program. But for the supreme embarrassment it would have caused the MSC, I would have had you sent home at your own expense.” “However, your performance in Venice trumped anything you did in CF. You embarrassed yourself and the entire program — you set a horrible example of what high student leaders should be, and you made it very hard to recruit the quality students from the program into the MSC because they cannot understand how someone so out of control could be given the responsibility of being MSC President. “In all likelihood, you are an alcoholic. You need AA and prob ably an outpatient rehabilitation program if you are going to avoid ruining this year and your life. If you do not take serious, imme diate steps to change your behavior with regard to alcohol, you will wind up a drunk and very likely seriously injure or kill your self or others before you are done ... It’s only a matter of time before you embarrass yourself in a public function at College Station like you did in Italy.” Fitzhugh also threatened to write to any law school Rowan applied to informing them that Rowan is unfit to be a law student. Fitzhugh declined to comment on Rowan’s behavior, saying only that he. shared his observations with University officials investigating the matter. “I like him (Rowan), I think he’s got potential, but I’m con cerned about him,” Fitzhugh said. Rowan denied the allegations in Fitzhugh’s email. “He has a lot of things wrong in that email, and that law school thing was way out of line,” Rowan said. Fitzhugh’s email also was sent to Jane Bailey, an MSC staff member. Rowan said, and added that he is considering filing a defamation of character lawsuit against Fitzhugh. m him be just ; released md Ethan Hi Carey, The II*. p Dogg. and A' Lcelee Sobic" esiing fall, but- or that one fita nice.
