ACTeLife hday, Sept« Page 4 THE BATTALION somethin* Monday, September LEASING Contin By Beth Brown THE BATTALION Dinosaurs, apes and pies. Oh my! As the summer movie season winds down. Hollywood has audiences wondering if it real ly was a blockbuster summer. Moviegoers had a variety of options of what to see this summer, but critics and audi ences alike did not vary much on their opin ions of the films that hit the big screen in the last three months. Perhaps the biggest disappointment \sas Planet of the Apes, starring Mark Wahlberg and Tim Roth. It was given a lot of hype in early summer months, but once it hit the big screen, the truth came out — it was a bad canted audiences' laughter in the first film, including masturbation gone wrong. But there was nothing distinct about this film that set it apart from its predecessor. In tact, it almost got a little old after a while. It was not a waste of money to go see this film because there were lots of laughs, but more could have been done with the storyline and some of the jokes seemed forced at times. And, of course, there were the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park 3. While the story line was not intelligent and the acting was not subtle enough, tlx* technology and visual effects were impressive. The dinosaurs actually looked a*al and were more believable than the reptiles of the original Jurassic Park Sam Neill returns as Dr. Alan Grant to battle the giant beasts, but tlx* story leaves much to be Smith claims th ns will lx* that last fite kiixl. Most viewers were expecting the same storyline from the original Planet of the Apes made famous by Charlton Heston, but Hollywood did not deliver. Where was Dr. Zayas? The story was almost silly, and the scream ing from the apes did not help. To further irk viewers, director Tim Burton ended the film with one of those “yes-we-hope-to-make-a- sequel” endings that left audiences confused. On the other end of the spectrum was American Pie 2, the sequel to the smash hit that grossed viewers out but had them rolling in the aisles. All of the same characters returned to reunite at a lake house after their first year of college for more fun. It certainly was the same brand of bathroom humor that desired. Perhaps two dinosaur park films were enough — or perhaps one was enough. Box office leaders from the summer so far are American Pie 2, Rush Hour 2. Jurassic Park 3, The Fast and the Furious and A meric a' s S m eethearts. The question now: What does Hollywood have in store next for moviegoers? One of the most talked about fall movies is Jay and Silent Boh Strike Back, which is the latest effort from filmmaker Kevin Smith. Smith delivers the quirky characters'that audiences grew to love from his earlier films, such as Clerks and Mall rats, played by actors Jason Lee. Ben Affleck and Smith himself. Of course, Jason Mewes rounds out the cast as the foul- mouthed, over-sexed but lovable Jay. What has Smith fans concerned, however, is that D’Ai Hi ill t! e flick.
