Page 4A Sports 4A Jt THE BATTALION Friday, August hursday, Augi A&M to battle No. 1 North Carol iNev Ags-Tar Heels set for showdown By Jeremy Brown THE BATTALION Senior forward Nicky Thrasher and the rest of the llth-ranked Texas A&M soc cer team will not have to wait long for their first test of the season — defending^ National Champion North Carolina vis its the Aggie Soccer Complex this Sunday. The first-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels can be described as a dynasty. The Tar Heels won their 16th NCAA National Championship last season by beating UCLA 2- 1 in the championship game of the 2000 NCAA Women’s College Cup. UCLA had knocked A&M out of the play offs in the third round with a score of 4-0. Last year's national title gave the Tar Heels their 17th title in 22 years of the program. Coach Anson Dorrance’s team has a 487-22-11 record during that span, including a 66- 3 record in the playoffs. This year’s North Carolina team returns seven starters from last year’s championship team. The Aggies return eight starters from last year’s 18-7 team. A&M coach G. Guerrieri said A&M is one of the best teams in the country when it plays at its pace, which it did in the 11-0 pounding of Tulsa in last week’s exhibition game. “We prepare for Carolina the best that we can,” Guerrieri said. “We play the best teams that we can. (Tulsa) is one of the better teams in our region.” The Aggie’s Hermann Trophy candidate, Thrasher, will take on two other candidates when the Aggies face North Carolina. Tar Heel defender Danielle Borgman and midfielder Jena Kluegel were both listed as one of the 13 candidates for the Hermann Trophy. Last year, Thrasher scored A&M’s only goal against the Tar Heels, but she will have to go through Borgman and the rest of the Tar Heels tough defense to repeat that performance. Kluegel will again be helping North Carolina put the ball in Kew vehicle- ;ff( ct Saturday. In 1991, a youngster from Dallas, Greg Hill, burst on the scene, rush ing for a freshman first-game record 212 yards and introducing A&M fans to “GHT” (Greg Hill Time) in a 45-7 victory over LSU. Now, 10 years later, another redshirt freshman from Houston looks to bust out against a team from Louisiana, this time McNeese State. Freshman Keith Joseph could be the shot in the arm the A&M running game has need ed and the fans might get a glimpse of “KJT.” The offense, with Joseph and quarterback Mark Farris, the Wrecking Crew and a rau cous opening crowd at Kyle Field will over whelm McNeese State. The last time A&M opened the season against a Division I-AA opponent, it was in 1997 and the Aggies defeated Sam Houston State, 59-6. Look for more of the same against the Cowboys. Aggies roll, 52-6 I only need one word to describe this week end's opening football game between Texas A&M and McNeese State — dismal. Dismal for all those who will make the trip back to Lake Charles, La., after seeing further at the Ui McNeese’s beating when the 2001 Aggie offense tests its legs at Kyle Field. Junior quarterback Mark Farris will have a field day on McNeese’s cornerbacks, and spring game standout Keith Joseph should rack up plenty of yards on the ground. Farris will get plenty of touchdown chances against the Cowboys, while the Aggies search for a go-to-guy to replace Robert Ferguson. The A&M coaches will have a sharp eye on the defensive unit and will not be disap pointed. Junior middle linebacker Brian Gamble will shine and mop up whoever gets by the solid Aggie defensive front. After the smoke clears and the final gun sounds, the scoreboard will read 42-3, A&M over McNeese. While most peopl;in Spanish. Fr predicting a total bio Callaloo now p by the Aggies.
