Gateway posted a loss of $20.8 million for the quarter ending June 30, compared with a profit of $118 million for the same period a year ago. The company said the layoffs will help it save $300 million. “As tough as these decisions were to make, we’re doing all the right things to create a new company with a unique competitive edge and a healthy, profitable future,” said Ted Waitt, chairman and chief executive. “We’re planning to win by building a lean, nimble organization that is unified and focused on our customer base unlike any other time in our history.” Gateway has a work force of about 19,000. The announcement came after the market closed for the day. Gateway stock rose 3 per cent $8.86 in after-hours trading. irs. ’‘Si jpe o \at A second man, Richard Mortens/ re ! !I back t San Pablo was arrested on outsta er >coi rants for drug and weapons charges|#* 1 'P s bey said he may also be charged intties-P* 6 11 Murder possible in two California wildfire deaths Evidence of a methamphetaminef ! lab was discovered near the siteivte^' began, Vroman said.
