Toshiba plans to NEWS IN BRIEF Missile fired atbui cut 17,000 jobs TOKYO (AP) — Toshiba Corp. is slashing 17,000 jobs, or about 9 percent of its work force, in the next three years, joining a grow ing list of Japanese manufacturers forced to cut jobs amid a global downturn in demand for electronics. The Tokyo-based company said Monday it now expects to post a loss for the year instead of a previously forecast profit. “As a manager I feel a heavy responsibility,” Toshiba president Tadashi Okamura told reporters. “My mission is to revive the com pany and ensure everyone develops a strong sense of crisis.” While acknowledging the company was in talks with various companies, Okamura refused to give specifics and refused comment on media reports that Toshiba was in talks with Infineon Technologies of Germany to merge their memory-chip businesses, an area that has especially suffered in the recent slump. A spokesman for Infineon, who declined to be identified, con firmed late Monday that the companies were discussing possible cooperation between their memory-chip units, but he declined to say how far the talks have progressed. kills at least fifty LUANDA, Angola (AP) Gunmen fired a missile at a P senger bus and then sprayed til vehicle with gunfire, kingatte 50 people, including several dren, news reports said Monda- The attack occurred Frida) northwestern Angola, Catholic radio station Ecctei said, citing local police.
