Bands of all genres spend more than half the year tour ing around the world bringing chart-topping albums to life. From Destiny’s Child to Aerosmith to ’NSYNC, the normal, run-of-the-mill con cert has been transformed into a musical production in volving theatrics, special ef fects and an array of costume changes. One of the most long- awaited tours of the year is of none other than Madonna. It has been eight years since her extravagant “Girlie Show” tour. Madonna follows up with her “Drowned World Tour 2001” (July 31st to Sep tember 22nd) and it is sure to please her fans. The innova tive Madonna draws inspira tion from the elements of fla menco, martial arts, punk rock, country and western and the circus to make this a true theatrical event. Unfortunate ly, she only will be hitting 12 cities in the United States, so not all of her fans will be able to enjoy this thrilling concert. No matter how annoying everyone thinks they are, the boy bands of the 21st century are back to stake their claim on every teeny-bopper who worships them.. The Back- street Boys (June 8th to Au gust 31st) and ‘NSYNC (June 5th to August 24th) will be out on tour to please millions of screaming J 2-year-olds. Sur prisingly so, it is not only teens who tend to flock to these boy band concerts. “I love ’NSYNC. I went to their concert last year, and they were so awesome. It’s only obvious that I’d go again this year,” said Candice Bate- rina, a Texas A&M graduate. What better way to pro mote music than to make a tour dedicated to the teen- based MTV request show, Total Request Live (TRL)P Destiny’s Child will be head lining this tour that also fea tures hip-hop artists Eve and Nelly, and pop stars Dream, 3LW and Jessica Simpson. The tour 0 u ly 18th to Sep tember 23rd) will have mil lions of avid TRL watchers screaming their heads off. Country superstar Tim McGraw takes his music on his plainly titled tour “Tim McGraw on Tour” (July 10th to August 27th). He will be stopping in many cities around Texas including Hous ton, San Antonio and Dallas. McGraw definitely will be a crowd pleaser to country lovers everywhere, especially in Texas. Fallowing her successful “Velvet Rope Tour,” Janet Jackson is already on her high ly anticipated “All For You Tour” (July 5th to December 17th). The venues and dates of . her tour continually change, but one could expect nothing but the best from this pop diva. “Janet sure can rock the roof off of any arena she per forms in,” said Mickey Le, a junior biomedical sciences major. “I have been waiting for her to go on tour since I went to her Velvet Rope’ con cert. Ever since then, I am to tally in love with her.” Many groups and artists tend to collaborate to go on tour together. “The Warped Tour” (June 22nd to August 12th) offers 30 bands per show, giving the tour different acts for each venue. Rock groups such as Rancid,’ Pen nywise, the Rollins Band and the Vandals are just some of the groups joining this tour. Newcomer Nelly Furtado, along with famous DJ, Moby, and hip-hop groups Outkast and The Roots all headline a tour entitled Area: One (July I 1th to August 5th). Various other groups such as Incubus are involved. Ozzfest (June 8th to August II th) will feature rock acts such as Black Sabbath, Mari lyn Manson, Slipknot, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Disturbed and Mud- vayne. Ozzfest is a definite for those who are looking for a good mosh pit. Many music artists use their tour as a promotional ef fort for their latest album. Fun-loving punk band Blink- 182 will tour promoting their new album, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (July 4th to July 23rd), while the Dave Matthews Band will be bring ing their original sound all over the globe Quly 17th to August 28th). Many music legends such as Stevie Nicks, James Taylor and John Mellencamp will be taking their timeless music on tour. Rock veterans -Aero- smith also are touring 0 u ly ,17th to August 21st). These rock legends show that you do not have to be young and pop to continue making good mu sic and taking it on tour. Whether someone’s taste in music is hip-hop, pop, country or rock, there is at least one concert this summer that one can enjoy. For information on any concert, surf the net or the local ticket sales office. The summer always brings over bearing heat, but it also brings scorching live music.
