(AP) — It still amazes Lewis Edmonson how quickly the lives of his four Prairie View A&M teammates ended on a chilly Texas night 16 months ago. “Everything just happened so fast, and it was so hard to ac cept,” he said. “I never had death touch me right in front of me like that.” The February 2000 van crash continues to haunt the team, but also inspires it. At the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Cham pionships this week, the Panthers finished a surprising fourth in the 400-meter relay. Lewis Turner, whose younger brother Jerome Jackson was killed in the acci dent, also advanced to Saturday’s 100 final. “It means a lot, because we weren’t expected to be doing wdiat we’re doing,” Turner said. “We came from a long ways back.” Coach Hoover Wright is mak ing his own comeback. He had broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and an injured back from the ac cident, and did not return to coaching until last fall. He’ll turn 7 3 next month,— eight years past retirement — but he did not want to miss this group of sprinters, which he calls the best he’s seen during his 40 years at Prairie View. “I imagined some are still thinking about what happened, because I know I think about it a lot,” Wright said. “But we man aged to overcome it.” Prairie View was best-known for losing an NCAA-record 80 straight football games between 1989-98, but that changed on Feb. 10,2000. The van was near the East Texas town of Karnack, about 150 miles east of Dallas, when the wreck happened. Nine ath letes, coach Wright and assistant coach Clifton Gilliard were on their way to Pine Bluff for an in door meet. Houston Watson, a middle- distance runner and hurdler, was driving the van, as he often did for short trips. About 7 p.m. on a rural two-lane road, a car slowed in front of the van and signaled to turn left. The van swerved right, then left, and rolled into a ditch. Watson, 21, was pinned inside the van and died instantly, as did Samuel Sturns, 20; and Vernon James, 18. Jackson, 21, died later at a hospital. Edmonson had been dozing in the back seat, and after the crash, he crawled from the overturned van through a wdndow. He did not know it, but his neck was broken. Dazed, he lay down on the grass near the van and then realized he could not move. > He looked over and saw Jack- son lying in the road, still alive but fatally injured. “I could see and hear every thing that was going on, but there was nothing I could do,” Ed monson said. Wright did not find out how serious the accident was until about two days later. “The ones that were remain ing came by and said, ‘This is us, coach,’ ” Wright said. “I said, ‘Where are the others?’ They said, ‘They didn’t make it.’ ” The Panthers were not ex pected to be much of a threat in the 400 relay, but on Wednesday they set a school record with a time of 39.40 seconds, the third- fastest preliminary time. In Fri day’s final, a slow exchange be tween freshman Tim Cherry and Turner, the No. 1 and 2 legs, produced a 39.45, still good enough for fourth. The team has dedicated the season to their dead teammates. r D Te V *tb Comi menu schoo courti and o public has lo agree: rights the se state, that tl declir de tii thn w SUi whetl Com: prope separ The c place: bearii that s Elkh; Tv Aniet (ACL mark court late tl of chi Supre city o will si be rei I Th A C diso civil mor Pres cone calk the ( Pale A stan Pale and Alin plat take muc coul natii CAP
