This book is intended to model its main character, Jerome Usher, after James Bond — surrounded by opulence and beautiful women, yet intelligent and deadly. Of course, this copies not only the Bond for mula, but also earlier International Series book. A\- signment Hong Kong. These two books are basically the same, with different names. Even the writing style is the same, making it difficult to believe the two books were written by different people. The line “Jerome shot the windows out first, then smoked all they asses,” could have come from either of them. The plot is set in New York, where a hit man is try ing to escape the rumor that he has lost his knack for killing. Between the occasional murders, the book drops more names than the most experienced groupie. By Page 10 of this pocket-sized book, the main char acter has already asserted his dominance over Puffy (Combs) and been toasted by Guru. What this book lacks in quality, it makes up for in pretentiousness. The book is definitely not worth buying, but if someone should happen to leave it in the bathroom, it could entertain for 15 minutes. Check our web page at http://www.4,0andGo.com This book was originally printed in 1904, and that alone makes it worth reading considering Ameri ca's current dealings with China. The author describes his experi ences in China and the economic and political forces that were re shaping the country at the time. Chi na in the early 20th century was heavily in debt to Western powers and trying to cope with numerous economic, technological and politi cal problems. Brown's view is that China pos sessed all the raw materials to be come a world power, but its leader ship was inept. He calls the Chinese people and their leaders stubborn, lazy and conniving. His views were perhaps correct in some cases, but today, his assertions wax racist. ■ The author is skilled in his ex amination of China’s economic fu ture, predicting a consumer econo my like the Western nations. While he did not predict the communist revolution, his predictions prove ul timately true as China continues to open its economic door. However, the book is too sim plistic in its views on Chinese cul ture and too quick to judge the Chi nese people. This book is worth reading for its historical value on a subject largely unknown to Ameri cans. It demonstrates an ethnocen- tricity rarely seen in modern books. The book is too shallow to make more than an interesting historical character study. (Grade: C) studying them. Her homey crime scene, as attorneysweI her on the stand, andherhi died recently.
