All four live in the southern port
city of Aden, where the two suspect
ed suicide bombers blew up a small
boat filled with explosives alongside
the Cole on Oct. 12 as it prepared to
refuel. Seventeen Americans were
killed.
Investigations have also revealed
that officials in Lahej, a stronghold of
the militant Islamic Jihad, provided
the suspected bombers with govern
ment cars for use within Aden and
between Aden and Lahej, 22 miles to
the north.
The sources said the suspected
bombers knew the officials from
their time together fighting the Sovi
ets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
The officials are believed to be af
filiated with the Islamic Jihad, a
group formed by veterans of the
Afghan war, and had met several
times with the suspected bombers
since March, when preparations for
the bombing are believed
started.

Don’t Mix Religion and Politics,
Unless It’s the 2000 Presidential
Race”
Dr. Byron Johnson
Distinguished Senior Fellow, Center for Research on Religion and
Urban Society (CRRUCS) and Director of the Office for the Study
and Prevention of Domestic Violence, U. of Pennsylvania
Abstract: George W. Bush and A1 Gore agree on one controversial
domestic policy: giving government money to churches and religious groups
to run social-service programs.
Why do both candidates plan to expand this practice?
Is there empirical research to support a policy that utilizes faith-based
initiatives to combat social problems?
What might these emerging church-state collaborations look like?
Has the “Christian” prison in Sugarland, Texas and supported by the
State of Texas based on earlier research by Dr. Johnson been a
success?
