S. Depart* ;d voter™ STATE THE BATTALION EL PASO (AP) — Democrats say they deserve a visit from Vice President A1 Gore during this week’s campaign . swing through the Southwest to shore up support in this far West Texas city. But so far, El Paso is not on the vice president’s agen da for Thursday’s rallies, which in clude a campaign stop at nearby Las Cruces, N.M. That is where, according to the Gore campaign, loyal supporters should head — across the state line, about 45 miles away. Congressman Silvestre Reyes of El Paso, one of Gore’s state campaign vice chairmen, says he is been unable to persuade campaign manager Bill Daley and others that an El Paso event is needed to reward El Paso’s rock-sol id loyalty to the Democratic Party. “Daley is holding fast on that. My only other alternative is to talk to the vice president,” Reyes told the El Paso Times on Tuesday while waiting for a re turn call from Gore. “At this point, they’re holding tough. If that is going to be the case, then I don’t anticipate that we will be cooperating with the Las Cruces event.” % El Paso Democrats are getting 10.000 free tickets for the * Gore rally, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Las Cruces Sports Complex. But some say making the drive to New Mexico on a school or work night will be difficult. “I can understand him passing through El Paso, but it wouldn’t hurt if he stopped for about 15 minutes or so,” said Rebecca Velazquez. “1 can understand that he has a tight schedule, but it would have been nice if he made an effort to stop.... But I won’t withhold my vote for him just because he didn’t stop.” Gore’s campaign workers in Wash ington, D.C., and Albuquerque, N.M., had no immediate plans to add a stop in El Paso. With its five Electoral College votes, New Mexico is one of 18 tossup states that could determine the outcome of the Nov. 7 presidential election. But in Texas, Gov. George W. Bush is fa vored to win. “All of the Democratic leadership in El Paso is holding tough. This is not wise in terms of what they are proposing,” Reyes said. “This is cold, hard, brutal politics. We just need a little more re spect than this. That’s What I want to tell the vice president. This is not good.” , Gore, during the 1992 campaign, flew into El Paso for a rally in Las Cruces as a vice-presidential candidate. His motorcade stopped briefly after leaving the El Paso airport for him to speak with reporters and to shake hands with a few supporters. Voter Laura Winter said the drive to Las Cruces, followed by a late-night return trip to El Paso and a need to be back at work the next morning, “just presents a big question.” Gore urged to stop in El Paso can under stand him pass ing through El Paso, but it wouldn't hurt if he stopped for about 15 minutes or so” — Rebecca Velazquez El Paso resident Page 7 A Halloween headliner ANDY HANCOCK/The Battalion Country band Cooder Graw performs in the Northgate prom enade Tuesday for the fourth annual BooGate festival. nent bet" lation frai hat theC r the exet J to swaf no viola® vpoited:' .
