THE BATTALION
The Legend of Drunken Master
Starring Jackie Chan and Anita Mui
Directed by Chia-Liang Liu
ffirlrsus
"HER
The Legend of
Drunken Master is
being touted as a
new movie in
America, but this
film has been avail
able on video from
Hong Kong since
about 1995. The
previous title was
Drunken Master 11.
Dimension Films
recently acquired
the U.S. rights to
the film, changed
the title and dubbed it, and the rest is history.
This film may be the best in Jackie Chan’s ca
reer. It features one of his funniest performances
and some of the best martial arts ever seen, even
though the characters’ lips move out of sync
with the audio.
The story is about a young martial arts stu
dent (Chan) who becomes involved with a gang
of thieves when he mistakenly grabs the wrong
package off a train. The high-powered gang
comes after Chan in search of its goods, and of
course he must fight them off with his infamous
style of drunken boxing — hence the title of the
film. Like Popeye had spinach, Chan has alco
hol to give him strength when he needs it most.
The film’s tone is classic Chan — lots of
slapstick and no subtlety. However, thanks in
part to Chan’s performance, the comedy does
not seem as bad as that of some other Hong
Kong imports. Most people will watchthistl
for the fighting anyway, and this film does®
liver in that regard.
The fight scenes are choreographed beat!
fully. Each one has a distinct and originalf*
so it does not seem like the audience iswaidl
the same thing again and again. Chan shows!
skill in contorting and bending his body as:«
moves his body in ways many viewers'
believe possible.
Like all good Rung fu movies, there isa)
minute finale that is nothing but serious 1
kicking.
For fans of Chan or kung fu movies, thisi
one of the best. People who have never seenj
kung fu movies should start with this one.

Lucky Numbers
Starring John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow
Directed by Nora Ephron
John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow together in a
comedy. The comic gods must have been smiling
when they heard about that pairing — until they
saw the frightfully unfunny Lucky Numbers.
Who would have thought that much talent could
be so badly wasted?
Travolta plays Russ Richards, the weather
man for a local television station in Harrisburg,
Pa. He thinks he is king of the world with his
snowmobile dealership and the fame he enjoys
until he receives a notice of foreclosure. Sudden
ly, he must come up with a large sum of money
to keep his perfect life from crumbling around
him. That is where Crystal (Kudrow), the lotto-
ball girl who works at the station, enters the pic
ture. In a desperate scheme to win the lottery
money, the two cheat the lottery only to find that
rigging the numbers is just the beginning of their
troubles.
Director Ephron, who is known for warm
fuzzies like You've Got Mai! and Sleepless in
Seattle, tries her hand at dark comedy here. She
seems to be so busy trying to undo her stereotype
that she focuses on the dark, totally
losing sight of the comedy. Vio
lence and bad language do not nec
essarily equal funny.
Travolta is this film's only gem.
Fresh off the Battlefield Earth de
bacle, he delivers one of his most
charming performances since
Michael, which is, coincidentally
enough, another Ephron film. But,
his excellent performance is not
enough to save this film from itself.
Kudrow, in her largest movie
role to date, turns what has been a
cute habit of playing the ditzy
blonde into an annoyingly over-the-
top performance.
Billed as Ephron's foray into
new and exciting areas of filmmak
ing and away from her sugary-
sweet romantic comedies. Lucky
Numbers fails to do anything but 1
fail, and that is just plain unlucky
for the people who see this film.
