Now it’s got the Subway Series, baby! Don’t like the Yankees or Mets? Fuhgedda- boudit. “It will give New York an opportunity to be even more arrogant,” Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said early Wednesday. “We’ll be able to go around and say we have the two best teams in baseball.” And the whole thing played out on the biggest platform of all — the World Series. Game 1 is Sat urday night at Yankee Stadium, with Andy Pettitte probably pitching against Mets ace Mike Hampton. “I hope that people behave themselves, because it’s going to split a few families up, I think,” said Yankees manager Joe Torre. “I have a feeling the city is not going to be the same for this next 10 days — and maybe for some time after that.” Even The New’ York Times, the old gray lady her self, is giddy. For the first time in memory, the news paper ran a banner over its flag, above news of the presidential debate and the Mideast crisis. In red ink, no less. “It’s a Subway Series! Yankees Join Mets,” the paper proclaimed. Giuliani, a huge Yankees fan, predicted his fa vorite team will win in six games. He appeared Wednesday night on the Late Show with David Letterman, reading a Top Ten list of “Cool Things About Having the World Series in New York.” Among them: “We’re gonna add a Mike Piaz za-style mustache to the Statue of Liberty.” Forgive fans in other parts of the country for be ing far from excited. “It’s a horror, is what it is,” said Chris Gerstell, 24, who works at Boston Beer Works, next to Fen way Park. His Red Sox, haunted by the Yankees for most of the 20th century, lost the 1986 World Series to the Mets. In Des Moines, Iowa, 48-year-old Stephanie Netolicky rolled her eyes when asked about the Subway Series. “I thought you were talking about a sandwich shop,” she said. No matter. New Yorkers will be able to supply all the juice necessary for this matchup. It will be the 14th Subway Series overall, and the first since the Yankees played the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956. “There were only three channels then,” recalled comedian Billy Crystal, celebrating in the club house after the Yankees beat Seattle 9-7 late Tues day night to clinch the AL championship series. “Now, the whole world will be watching.” A day earlier, the Mets finished off St. Louis in the NL championship series. They had their star power, too— v actors Tim Robbins and Susan Saran don poured champagne in the winning locker room. And while the next few days will feature neat matchups on the field — Tino vs. Timo, Bernie vs. Benny — there also might be a lot to watch in the stands. Mets star Piazza dates the Playboy Playmate of the Millennium. Yankees star Derek Jeter has been linked to Miss Universe. The Yankees got a day off Wednesday to rest. A few Mets pitchers threw at Shea Stadium, though rain washed out a full workout. The wet weather did nothing to players’ spirits. “This is our chance to get a placeonti said Mets outfielder Jay Payton. “Who can walk around with their chinil bragging rights for a long time.” t “There’re more Yankee fans than Me: the city. That’s just a result ofwinning.F teams that win,” he said. “The Yankees nitely the team of the city.” The Yankees are trying to become the to win three straight Workf Series champ since Oakland in 1972-74. TCU kicking itself for missed opportuni FORT WORTH (AP) — When Dennis Franchione was hired at TCU, he did the right thing for a coach taking over a 1-10 team. Soon after taking the job in De cember of 1997, Franchione got the downtrodden Horned Frogs out of a scheduled “money” game against powerhouse Nebraska. His reasoning was simple. Franchione figured the third sea son would be a pivotal year in his tenure at TCU. He did not want the Cornhuskers looming as the opener. “If I would have known three years ago what I know today, I wouldn’t have made any changes. We would have played the game,” Fran chione said. “But you know, we made the smart decision three years ago.” In 2000, that pivotal third year, the 11 th-ranked Horned Frogs (5-0) are one of five undefeated Division I-A teams in the country — another being No. 1 Nebraska (6-0) — and have their highest ranking since also being 11th in'the preseason poll 40 years ago. TCU has won 10 straight games, its longest winning streak since the school-record 14 in a row in 1937- ’38. The Frogs also have a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate in LaDainian Tomlinson, the nation’s leading rusher at 194.8 yat game. Franchione always was opt about what TCU couldeventu complish, but not evewMei winning seasons cappqgfyAiwf tones his first two seasons.^ he have figured that the Frot go into 2000 with their first son ranking since 1960ami( a perfect record. Swimming Continued from Page IB “We have ail the things necessary to attract the top swimmers,” Bultman said. “We just need one or two more blue-chippers to come here before we can really start moving up.” The men’s swimming team is coming off a 17th- place finish in last year’s NCAA meet, down from 1999, when the team finished in the Top 10 for the first time ever. The 2000 team was competing without seniors Michael Colligan, Devin Howard and Keven Kehlen- bach. Men’s coach Mel Nash said, “It’s huge to have lost our three best seniors last year and still be 17th at the NCAA.” The three seniors sat out last season so they would have the chance to compete in the NCAA championship meet, hosted this year by A&M. With those seniors back, the men’s swimming team will have eight All-Americans and a talented newcomer on the team. The list of All-Americans. comprises Colligan, Howard, Kehlenbach, Alfred Mansour, David Morrow, Riley Janes, Patrick Kennedy and Nik Tate. Each has been an All- American, either as an indi vidual or on a relay. The men’s sole newcomer is Michael Greene, a senior transfer from Ogden, Utah. Greene comes in as a veteran with swimming experience in two NCAA championship meets. Nash said it would be hard to single out anyone as the star because so many of the swimmers have scored points for the team in meets, As.for the meet Nash said, it will b his team to face some tition outside of races. “It gives usachanci where we tire at tfiisf various events,” b The meet against TC begin at 5 p.m. Frida| Student Recreation Natatorium.
