Over the last several years, the team has developed enough national respect to allow A&M to host the 2002 NCAA Tennis Championships. While the fall portion of the sched ule does not count toward standings, it does provide opportunities for de velopment of a championship team. “In September and October, we have a chance to build our foundation FILE PHOTO/The Battalion Shuon Madden, A&M's only four-time All-American, will compete as an amateur in professional tournaments this fall to prepare for the spring. According to Treibly, the players will see some top competition this fall, at tournaments such as the 1TA All-American Tournament, held last weekend in Atlanta, Ga. Cody Hubbell competed in the main draw of that tournament but lost in the first round to Louisiana State’s Ajay Ramaswami. If Treibly and head coach Tim Cass are looking to set a good foundation, they could not have asked for a better group of players to put into the mix. The star of the team is Shuon Madden, who enters the season ranked No. 2 in singles and No. 18 in doubles. He has been named All- American twice in singles and twice in doubles, making him the only four- time All-American in school history. In 2000, Madden was named Big 12 Player of the Year after finishing with a singles record of 36-9. Madden did not participate in the ITA All-American, but will play in several professional tournaments as an amateur this fall. “It is a chance for him to save up and have a master blaster spring time,” Treibly said. Sharing the No. 18 rank with Mad den in doubles is Tres Davis. Davis is the nation’s top junior doubles player and the No. 2 junior singles player. See Men’s Tennis on Page 8. By Jeremy Brown The Battalion There is an atmosphere of excitement surrounding the 2000- 2001 Texas A&M women's tennis team. Eight of the 12 team members are newcomers, bringing with them a great deal of talent and expectations for success. With leadership from those four returning players, the team is looking to do great things this year, including mak ing a run at the Big 12 title. “I’m really optimistic about our chances — singles, dou bles and teamwise,” said coach Bobby Kleinecke. Kleinecke’s optimism has most likely been fueled by the team's accomplishments earlier this fall. In the Illinois Midwest Blast, both teams that made the fi nals in doubles were from A&M. A third A&M doubles team advanced to the consolation match. “We went out to Illinois trying to strengthen our doubles, and I feel that we did that,” Kleinecke said. Individually, Ashley Hedberg took third place and Eva Marcial won the consolation match. Thursday, the women tried to continue this run of success when they traveled to the ITA All-American tournament. Jessica Roland, Ashley Hedberg, Leah Killen and Majorie Terburgh competed individually in the prequalifying round, and Roberta Spencer competed as part of a doubles team with Killen. However, all were eliminated in the first round. “We did not have a good day,” Kleinecke said. The qualifying round of the tournament will begin Tuesday. In the qualifying round is Martina Nedorostova, who will be competing as an individual and in a doubles team with Ter burgh. Also in the qualifying round are Roland and Hedberg. Kleinecke said he was disappointed with his team's per formance but pointed out one positive. “It was very hard to get in,” Kleinecke said.“So I feel good that we got this many in.” See Women on Page 8. FILE PHOTO/The Battalion Texas A&M's Martina Nedorostova, ranked No. 77 in the nation in singles and No. 33 in doubles, is the Aggies' top 2000 returner. Saturday, in a showdown of un- beatens between the North and South, then-No. 8 Oklahoma over came then-No. 2 Kansas State, showing the southern division of the conference may finally have a na tional contender. Last week, the Big 12 boasted three undefeated teams. This week there are only two, and the national total dropped down to six schools with unblemished seasons. Once again, this time on Oct. 28, the Big 12 conference will get brag ging rights to the clash of a second group of undefeated titans. It appears that, before the month is over, the nation will have seen the prelude to the Big 12 Championship game. Nebraska or Kansas State has the North sealed up with only one true threat: 5-1 Iowa State, whose only loss is to the Cornhuskers. Meanwhile, in the South, it looks like Oklahoma finally has enough consistency to make it to the championship game. The biggest excitement of the race to win the Big 12 is not the Big 12 trophy, but what will most likely be the right to contend for the na tional championship trophy. Home-field advantage, no more Last weekend, for the first time in the history of the Big 12, every team on the road captured a win. The Sooners ended Kansas State’s 25-game win streak in Man hattan; Iowa State rallied against Oklahoma State to get the win with just 18 seconds remaining. BCS rankings approach If any conference team hopes to even contend for the national title in the Orange Bowl this January, it will have to come out in the top two spots in the decisive Bowl Championship Series rankings. The first rankings of the season will be announced Monday. Last season, the Big 12 had the sec ond-most teams in the BCS Final 15. Television schedule The final schedule for this week’s Big 12 games was announced Mon day.
