THE BATTALION Page 4 Tuesday, July I8,2(J Lake Somerville drowning accident claims lives of 5 family members nesdayJuly 18.200 SOMERVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Southeast Texas lake outing took a tragic turn when five members of a family drowned at Lake Somerville Sunday. When three young cousins ran into difficulty staying above water, the father of two of the children dived in to try to save them, as did his brother- in-law, said Burleson County Sheriff Gene Barber. All five died. Elasar Manzanares, 37, jumped in after his daughter, Lupita Manzanares, 11; son, Jorge Manzanares, 8; and nephew, Kevin Manzanares, 9, got in trou ble. Jose Rangel, 22, the children's uncle, also jumped into the water to help. Rangel went under about 100 yards from shore. He was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center “We would have liked to have found them (Sunday), hut dark came on us.” — Gene Barber Burleson County sheriff in Bryan, where he died in the intensive care unit. Manzanares' body was found on Sunday within 50 feet of his daugh ter's body. Dive teams from the Texas Department of Public Safety and neighboring Washington County found the bodies of Jorge Manzanares and Kevin Manzanares Monday morning. "We would have liked to have found them (Sunday), but dark came on us," Barber said. A third unidentified man tried to help, but had trouble swimming and returned to shore, Barber'said. "He said the little girl was wav ing her hands in the water and hol lering for someone to come help," Barber said. "The little boys were already in the water." The family came to Welch Park To place a classified ad: Phone 845-0569 or Fax 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Bldg.
