SPORTS Friday. April 28.20(M) THE BATTALION Page 9 tone Star Showdown Aggies face Longhorns in pivotal 3-game Big 12 series BY JASON LINCOLN The Battalion April has not been kind to the Texas baseball team. After an April 4th win over the No. 9 University of I lous- In Cougars, ihe Aggies dropped a record 12 straight games and fell from Jcond to eighth in the Big 12 stand- ilgs. Tuesday, after 21 days without a wm, A&M rallied in the eighth and Jiith innings to defeat Sam Houston It,ite University. With that it was over. The streak [Jas gone just as quickly as it had be- gi i. And it was just in time as the Ag- jes prepare for what would likely have bivn the pivotal conference series of tlk year against the No. 6 University of ikas Longhorns. Now the Aggies do not have to take any excess worries into the weekend and can concentrate solely on going after the Longhorns and winning their first week end series since March. “It’s big just because we got the los ing streak off our mind,” said junior right fielder Daylan Holt. “Now that we finally won, we don’t have to wor ry about the streak hanging over our heads. It takes a big load off and will allow us to go in and be totally focused on Texas.” The series will open in Austin on Fri day at 6:30 p.m. The game will mark the second sellout of the season for the Longhorns’ Disch-Falk Field. However, the Aggies will have the benefit of clos ing the series at Olsen Field. Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest in College Station will be televised by Fox Sports Net and the se ries will end Sunday at 2 p.m. A&M baseball coach Mark Johnson has characterized the series as one of the hardest series the Aggies will play. “We’re going to have to pitch well, play solid defense, but most of all we’re going to have to hit,” Johnson said. “Teams haven’t hit well against Texas because they have some strong pitching. To win you have to have more runs and that’s been one of our problems right now. So the match-up from the outside- in doesn’t look good, but that changes as teams pick it up.” Despite the problems in matching up, the Aggies have one thing on their mind — a series win. And with the los ing streak in the past, A&M is in posi tion to do just that. GUY ROGERS/'I'HK BATTALION A&M catcher Brent Howell slides into second against the Sam Houston State on Tuesday. The Aggies broke a 12-game losing streak with the win and look to carry over the same success to this weekend’s series against UT. Killer crossover Sepulveda joins list of Longhorns jumping ship to come to A&M baseball BY JASON LINCOLN The Battalion Texas A&M baseball has had its share of crossovers — players that have decided to join the na tionally acclaimed Aggies after falling outs with the University of Texas. Eric French and Shawn Schu macher both made the switch from burnt orange to maroon. The change paid dividends as French followed his A&M career by entering the collegiate coaching ranks and Schumach er was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. The most recent switch over promises to be just as successful. Carlos “Los’.’ Sepulveda knows he made the right choice when he decided to leave the Uni versity of Texas baseball team. He also knows the move to Olsen Field was necessary to keep his game in top form. Now Los will get his chance to prove how big the decision to transfer has paid off for the sophomore as the Aggies and the Longhorns meet for the first time this season in the Aggies’ second to last Big 12 series of the season. “It’s a pretty normal situation for some of us older guys who played with Shawn Schumacher and Eric French, but it’s always fun watching how [the former UT See Sepulveda on Page 11. 1998 Pos.: CF/DH 19 RBI’s 5 HR BA rank: 7th vs. A&M: 2 runs 2000 Pos.: LF 33 RBI’s 8 HR BA rank: 3rd! vs. UT: TBP CARLOS SEPULUEDA RUBEN DELUNA/Thk Battalion orship Directory ftssemBCy of god ‘Episcopal Bethel Temple Assembly of God 2608 Villa Maria, Bryan 776-4835 Sunday Worship 8:30, 10:45, 6:00 pm College & Career Class Sun, 9:30 Randy Scott, Pastor www.startel.net/bethel St. Thomas Episcopal 906 George Bush Dr. • College Station, TX (Across from Duncan Dining Hall) Sunday services at 8:00, 9:00 and especially for late rising Ags, 11:15 a.m. Next door to Canterbury House, the Episopal Student Center ‘Baptist fFree ‘WittBaptist Try us out!
