CAMPUS Page 2 I HE BATTALION Student safety bills considered Movin’ on lay, Apr BY JEANETTE SIMPSON The Battalion The 52nd session of the Student Senate's last meeting to consider new items of legislation will fo cus on three bills created to enhance student safety. The first bill, i('approved, will create a Lupe Med ina Program committee within the Student Govern ment Association (SGA). The Lupe Medina Program is a student managed program to prevent drowsy dri ving. Created at Texas A&M, it has grow n to include more than 80 hotels in Texas and surrounding states which offer a discount to weary travelers. “This program deserves the rights and privileges to be a full committee in the Student Government As sociation," said Robert Furgeson, student senator and a junior political science major. In an etlbrt to reduce congestion which will be faced by resident students during the construction ofthe West Campus Parking garage and on Wellborn Road, se\ er- al senators have authored a bill which will temporarily move all resident parking spaces to main campus. “This bill will propose that parking and trans portation sen ices change the parking areas adjacent to Kyle Field into resident parking only and move the commuter parking areas located in this area to W r est Campus," said Justin Strickland, chairperson of Stu dent Services and a junior political science major. If passed, Uie hill would suggest changing parking areas 48,62.69 and 91 to resident lots. Parking areas 61,63 north and 63 south on West Campus will be come commuter lots. “This proposed change is only temporary aid was designed to eliminate the hazard that resident students would face if forced to move around the construction and road work,” Strickland said. file final bill, created to make A&M a viler place, proposes that a formal crosswalk across Agronomy Road be considered under emergency consent. This means that a vote is not required for the bill to be ac cepted unless a senator disagrees with the hill. Several other bills will be considered. A bill sup porting the Resident I fall Association's decision to place bicycle racks outside the Northside parking garage w ill also he considered under emergency consent. Ollier hills to be voted on are those which clarify the Student (iov- emment constitution and create a International Student Leaders ofthe Americas conference.
